P R A Y E R B E F O R E W O R S H I P

O Lord–our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter–we are assembled in your presence to hear your holy Word. We pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word, we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Jesus’ sake. Amen (Note: additional prayers for before and after worship are found in the hymnal on pages 10-11,134–139)

G O D ’ S W O R D F O R T O D A Y

The human mind is a powerful tool, capable of reasoning its way to much success and many great things. The human mind knows how to guard the bottom line. The human mind knows what is most cost effective. The human mind can quickly determine what is the most reasonable course of action. But the human mind, despite all its vaunted wisdom, cannot find its way to the cross. The cross is incomprehensible to the human mind. One man, the God-man, dies for the sins of all men?! It is only when our fear and trust is in the LORD that we can know his great mercy and love and understand how that affects our lives for him.

W E L C O M E T O O U R C H U R C H

We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. Restrooms and nursery area are located in the parish hall at Emmanuel and in the lower level and link-way at St. John’s. It’s nice to have you visit today. “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more, as you see the day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). Welcome to God’s house! May God bless our worship together.

A S E R V I C E O F M O R N I N G P R A I S E  Morning Praise, composed by Marty Haugen, is based on the historic service called “Matins.” Joined to Christ, our risen Lord, we glorify God as we rise to the activities of this new day.

COME, OH, COME, LET US SING TO THE LORD An arrangement of Psalm 95, this song of praise reminds us of the many blessings that come to us from the hands of our Creator God. Pastor and congregation join in singing the refrain and the verses.

CHOIR SINGS PSALM OF THE DAY “The Perfect Wisdom of Our God” This morning psalm brings to mind the Lord’s abiding presence and unending love through all of life’s ways.

T H E W O R D The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST READING Proverbs 9:8-12

Summary: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom

Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you. Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.”

SECOND READING Philemon 1:1,10-21

Summary: Paul’s plea for Onesimus

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me. I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you. I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do will be spontaneous and not forced. Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good—no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord. So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self. I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.

VERSE OF THE DAY Philippians 4:4 Alleluia. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Alleluia.

Please stand

GOSPEL READING Luke 14: 25-33

Summary: Count the cost of being a disciple

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

NICENE CREED

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY 528 Christ Is Our Cornerstone

SERMON by guest pastor Jim Kleist Matthew 28:16-20 (EHV)

“Gather Disciples From All Nations”

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some hesitated because they were uncertain. Jesus approached and spoke to them saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and gather disciples from all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and by teaching them to keep all the instructions I have given you. And surely I am with you always until the end of the age.” Please stand

YOU ARE GOD, WE PRAISE YOU Te Deum

XG O D ’ S     W O R D    F O R     T O D A Y X “Hey, that’s my seat!”  School children get in fights day after day, arguing over their special place.  Adults look and laugh, and yet we  do the same in life when we take pains to assure that we get what’s coming to us – at work, at home, among friends and family – and that everybody sees and knows how important we are.  But in these lessons we are reminded that our King is coming, the Almighty Ruler of the universe, Jesus Christ, next to whom, because of sin, we are nothing and deserve the lowest place.  But, because of His love for us, Jesus invites us to the place of honor.

XP R A Y E R     B E F O R E     W O R S H I P X O Lord Jesus Christ, preserve this congregation of believers with your never-failing mercy.  Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation.  Through your Holy Word and by your Holy Spirit, come to us, forgive our sins, and cause our faith to grow in strength and productivity–so that, with your help, we produce many fruits of faith pleasing to you.  Bless our worship today, in Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Almighty God, your Son our Savior was taken up in glory and intercedes for us at your right hand. Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

XT H E   W O R D X

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                                                                  Proverbs 25: 6, 7

Summary: Humility is appropriate for Christians

Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among great men; it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman.

PSALM 119a                                                                                                                                                hymnal page 109

Men sing first line, women sing second line and all sing refrains and Gloria.

SECOND LESSON                                                                                                                             Hebrews 13:1-8

Summary: A humble Christian loves people and uses money

Keep on loving each other as brothers.  Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” {Deut. 31:6}  So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.  What can man do to me?” {Psalm118:6,7}

Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                                               Jeremiah 15:16

Alleluia. Your words became a joy to me, and the delight of my heart. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                    Luke 14:1, 7-14  (today’s sermon text)

Summary: Jesus pictures true humility and generosity

One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.  If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, `Give this man your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.  But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, `Friend, move up to a better place.’  Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests.  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.  But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed.  Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

SAVE THE DATE FOR WELCOME HOME SUNDAY: OCTOBER 13TH

Worshiping our God—listening to him speak to us in his Word and responding with our praise—is always special. However, it can be especially joyful when the house is packed. Think of the singing on Christmas Eve… or the way we need to set up chairs on Easter Sunday. Yet, even on those days, we have members who are out of town.

The goal of Welcome Home Sunday is to have a day when everyone that is part of our Christian family comes together. After all, church is supposed to be a home, and believers are kin. Our focus of worship on this day is the blessing of Christian community. Thus, we want 100% of our members there.

Please do everything possible to set that date aside so that we can pack the house that day. Following the 10:00a.m. St. John’s service, breakfast will be served in the lower level of church.

PLEASE JOIN FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS WE CELEBRATE WITH A PARTY IN HONOR OF BETH JOHNSON’S 90TH BIRTHDAY Saturday, September 28th from 1:00-4:00pm Open House, Location: Senior Dome 140 Lake Ct. Montello, WI (Behind Fire Station) No gifts please.

CHOIR Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name. – Psalm 30:4. If you love to sing, please consider joining the joint choir of St. John’s and Emmanuel. Choir practices are Monday evenings for just an hour at 6:30. Please contact Lynn Sellnow if you are interested in joining the choir, or if you have questions.

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY We begin to gather by 9am and are ready to go by 9:15am. “They” were watching Jesus. We need to be be watching him too! How? Why?

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY Faith is not a good feeling you have. Faith is not the cause of but the result of Truth. Faith says “Yes” when everything else says “No.” This week we will look at the faith of Abel. What made him a hero? Tuesday, 6:30pm. Church basement. Men – about 15 other guys would love to have you join them!

Pastor:  Today we observe a national holiday that honors those whose labor contributes to our well-being.  Our theme is Labor for the Lord. God values productive and honest labor, and blesses it.

Opening Hymn: CW Supplement 777, Now Let Us All in Hymns of Praise”

Invocation

P:  In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen

Call to Worship

P:  God said, “Six days you will labor and do all your work,

C:  But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord.”

P:  Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

C:  And I will give you rest.”

P:  We come in the name of the Holy Spirit, resting from our labors,

C:  Let us worship God this day!”

Confession and Absolution

C:  Lord of life, I confess that I have not lived the life of which I’m capable.  I have gifts which I have not used, and gifts which I’ve misused. I have not loved you above all others, and failed to love my neighbor as myself.  Have mercy and forgive and strengthen me for your service.

P:  Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through Jesus Christ.  There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ.
Therefore, as a called servant of Christ, and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen

Prayer of the Day

Heavenly Father,  we are blessed to be given work to do and the ability to do it.  Finding satisfaction in the work we do is a gift from God that gives meaning to our lives.  Fill us with your Spirit so that we might live as faithful servants of Jesus our King and do all our work as for the Lord.  Keep us ever grateful for these blessings. In Jesus’ name, Amen

The Word on Work

Reading 1:  Work is ordained by God.  Some have the misconception that labor originated as a result of the Fall into sin. They assume that it is part of the curse that descended upon humanity after the Fall.  But that’s not the case. God’s commission for humans to work was prior to the Fall. In fact, the first one to work was God himself. The Bible declares that God worked in Genesis 1:1. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  By doing his creative work, God sanctified labor as holy and good and blessed.

Then, after creating the first human, God commissioned him to work.  Genesis 2:15 records: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”  This was before the Fall. It happened in a time of blessing. This means that our labor is a part of God’s blessing.  We were created in God’s image, and part of that image is that we are created to do God’s work on earth as his agents and in his stead.  God cares for the world, so we work to take care of it, just as he cares for other people, so we work to care for them in his name.

Reading 2:  Work is a blessing because it enables us to experience fulfillment in life.  God looked at his work and declared: “It is good!” in Genesis 1:31. We, too, can find satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment in our labor.  It is a high and holy privilege to be able to create, serve and provide for ourselves and others through our work.

Work has three purposes:  to provide money or resources to supply the necessities of life; to provide satisfaction for a job well done; and to serve God.  In order to serve God in our work, we need to follow his commands. His Word gives us the manner in which we are to perform in relation to our employer:  Ephesians 6:6-7 “Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.”

Reading 3:  Work is honorable.  All professions and all kinds of work, assuming they are legal and Biblically ethical, are honorable before the Lord.  There is no difference between sacred and secular work. All work brings glory to God and fulfillment to you, if it is done to God’s glory.  1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”

Work also provides an opportunity for witness.  Wherever we are, we reveal a powerful message, both verbal and nonverbal, by the way in which we perform our work, our attitude, and the way we treat others.  We are Christ to the world. The world today needs this powerful witness to the reality of Christ and the difference that he makes in his followers. Matthew 5:14-16 says: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

P:  But as important and valuable as work is, there is one arena in which our labor holds no value to God.  That is in our salvation. The one work that we cannot do is that of our own salvation from sin, death, and hell.

Usually one has to work to have success.  But this principle doesn’t apply to the most important thing in life—eternal life.  Our work does not precede it. Ephesians 2:8-9 states: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.”  Our sinful nature disqualifies us from eternal life and no amount of hard work on our part can change that! Christ’s saving work of living the perfect life we couldn’t live, dying the sacrificial death we deserved for sin, and rising again in victory over death…this is the work that did it all for us!  Christ’s work earned our salvation.

Now we seek to work for God and with God, not to earn salvation, but out of thanks for it.  Ephesians 2:10 affirms the place of work in our lives. It states: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  We are not saved by our work, but we are saved for good work. As those created in the image of God, we carry out his workmanship in the labor which we do in his name and for his kingdom.

Congregational Hymn, CW 484,  “Brothers, Sisters, Let Us Gladly”

Sermon—Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:18-26

     “There is Meaning in Life”

          1. Not in human achievement

          2. But in God’s announcement

2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything

is meaningless.”

18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? 23 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless.

24 A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Rise for congregational hymn CW 270, “We All Believe in One True God”

Offering (Greet one another, sign the friendship register, and a brief note to the missionary insert.)

Prayer

P.  O God the Father, who planted a garden in Eden laboring in the soil to create your earth-born man; O Christ the Son, who labored in the woodshop and upon the cross; O Holy Spirit who works within and without us to bring the Kingdom to this earth, work within and without us now, we pray.

All:  Make us strong and faithful laborers in your body, the Church, that it might be strengthened by the love you have shown us.

Make us effective and peaceable laborers among the governments of the earth that wisdom, peace, and justice might prevail.

Make us compassionate and tireless laborers among all those who suffer any sort of need, that we may be instruments of your healing and comfort.

Make us diligent and listening laborers in this place of worship that the community around us might see our love for one another and give glory to our Father in heaven.

Make us happy laborers of your Gospel message, that those who mourn may be assured of your powerful resurrection and the joy of life eternal.

All this we pray through Christ our Lord.  Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Communion at Emmanuel follows pages 21-24–The Sacrament–in the hymnal.  Communion Hymns 307 and 309.

St. John’s continues below.

Benediction

May you be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of God.  (Colossians 1:9-10)

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and + give you peace.

Amen

SEPTEMBER IS BEFRIEND A MISSION MONTH AT ST. JOHN’S.  WHAT’S THAT?   The Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society supports WELS missions in 3 ways: prayer, encouragement, & giving.  Missions & missionaries are assigned to our St. John’s & Emmanuel LWMS groups biannually.  Although our support of these missions continues for 2 years, our Beaver Dam Circuit also assigns each church in the circuit a “Befriend A Mission Month.”  Our task is to create a shower of support during that month by increasing our prayers, sending a few more notes & emails, & giving a little extra for missions.  LWMS also uses the month to increase awareness of WELS missions among ALL church members–our Little Lambs, our day school & SS children, our teens & young adults, our adults, & even our older adults in care facilities. Prayer, encouragement, & giving are tasks which have no age-limitations!  We can ALL be a friend!  So when we ask YOU to join us by sending a note or signing a card, by saying a prayer, or by giving a little something extra to missions, we hope you will!  Supporting mission & missionaries and getting to know some of them personally are joy-filled opportunities!

FALL MISSION OFFERINGS will be collected by LWMS during September at both churches. Please use the collection container at the church where you are a member–In the church entrance both at Emmanuel and at St. John’s.  WELS mission projects that will benefit from your gift are these Beaver Dam Circuit projects:  Home Mission—Outreach to Asians and World Mission: Ukraine Project. Other projects to be decided at next summer’s LWMS convention are posted by the collection container. These offerings are important to many missions and are welcome from everyone with a heart for missions!

Are you saying to yourself: “I didn’t get that memo?” No, you didn’t win the lottery last night. Bill Gates didn’t die and leave you all his money. But the fact still remains that you are the richest person in the world, along with all others who have put their faith in Jesus as Savior. So where are our riches? They’re being stored in heaven for us, “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade” (1 Peter 1:4). They may be hidden with God at this very moment, but that doesn’t mean they’re not ours at this very moment. God has promised them to us, and he will deliver!

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST  READING                                                                                     Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:18-26

Summary: All earthly things pass away

“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.

A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

SECOND READING                                                           Colossians 3:1-11 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: Set your mind on things above

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is yourlife, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                               John 14:23

Alleluia. Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” Alleluia.

GOSPEL READING                                                                                            Luke 12: 13-21

Summary: The parable of the rich fool

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Faith-Life Expresses Itself in Fervent Faith-Filled Prayer – God has given most people the wonderful gift of speech. Through words, we communicate our thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Without words it would be much harder to express ourselves, a frustrating prospect! Our thoughts, ideas, and feelings need an outlet, and so does our faith-life! Faith looks for ways to express itself, and one way Christian faith does that is in fervent faith-filled prayer.

We prepare ourselves to worship the one Savior God by expressing our humble repentance, offering our fervent prayers and singing our thankful hymns of praise.

THE GATHERING RITE ON THE WORD OF GOD & SERVICE OF THE WORD

Please stand

M:            In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C:              (spoken) Amen.

OPENING HYMN 221                                                                                                                 Blessed Jesus, at Your Word

  1. Blessed Jesus, at your Word
We are gathered all to hear you.
Let our hearts and souls be stirred
Now to seek and love and fear you,
By your teachings, sweet and holy,
Drawn from earth to love you solely.

M:            Oh, how I love your law!

C:              I meditate on it all day long.

M:            Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,

C:              for they are ever with me.

M:             I have more insight than all my teachers,

C:              for I meditate on your statutes.

M:            How sweet are your words to my taste,

C:              sweeter than honey to my mouth!

2     All our knowledge, sense, and sight
Lie in deepest darkness shrouded
Till your Spirit breaks our night
With the beams of truth unclouded.
You alone to God can win us;
You must work all good within us.

M:            All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

C:              so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

M:            Yet so often we have despised God’s Word and failed to gladly hear and learn it. For this and all our sins, we bow before God and humbly ask his forgiveness.

C:              Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

3    Gracious Savior, good and kind,
Light from Light, from God proceeding,
Open now our heart and mind;
Help us by your Spirit’s pleading.
Hear the cry your people raises;
Hear and bless our prayers and praises.

M:            God gave his Word so “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name”. The Scriptures testify about Jesus, who lived a perfect life for you, died on the cross to pay for all your sins, and rose again to assure you of your salvation. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C:              (spoken) Amen.

4    Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Praise to you and adoration!
Grant that we your Word may trust,
Confident of our salvation,
While we here below must wander,
Till we sing your praises yonder.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M:  Let us pray.

O Lord, your ears are always open to the prayers of your humble servants, who come to you in Jesus’ name. Teach us always to ask according to your will that we may never fail to obtain the blessings you have promised; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  (spoken) Amen.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                              Genesis 18:20 (today’s sermon text)Summary: Abraham’s prayer

Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.  Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?  What if there are fifty righteous people in the city?  Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?   Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike.  Far be it from you!  Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”

Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”

He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak.  What if only thirty can be found there?”

He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more.  What if only ten can be found there?”

SECOND LESSON                                                                                                                          Colossians 2:6-15

Summary: Prayer is our privilege earned by Christ’s atonement

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.  In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.  And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                                                       John 6:68

Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                                              Luke 11:1-13

Summary: Lord, teach us to pray

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.  When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say: “`Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.  May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us each day our daily bread.  Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one'”

Then he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, `Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’

“Then the one inside answers, `Don’t bother me.  The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed.  I can’t get up and give you anything.’  I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone; or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?  If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

                        sung by Anna Glunn

1               May the peace of God our heav’nly Father,

And the grace of Christ the risen Son,

And the fellowship of God the Spirit

Keep our hearts and minds within his love.

Refrain       And to him be praise for his glorious reign

From the depths of earth to the heights of heav’n.

We declare the name of the Lamb once slain—

Christ eternal, the King of kings.

2               May this peace which passes understanding,

And this grace which makes us what we are,

And this fellowship of his Communion

Make us one in spirit and in heart.

G O D ’ S     W O R D    F O R     T O D A Y Faith-Life Reveals Itself in Love for Others – We cannot see into other people’s hearts, but we can discern Christian faith by its fruits in words and actions. God tells us that love, joy, peace, patience, and more make up the fruit of faith. (See Galatians 5:22,23.) If we truly have crossed over from death to life, it will show in love for others, as James has written: “I will show you my faith by what I do” (James 2:18).

P R E P A R A T I O N   F O R   W O R S H I P

We prepare ourselves to worship the one Savior God by expressing our humble repentance, offering our fervent prayers and singing our thankful hymns of praise.

OPENING HYMN 493                                                                 Forgive Our Sins as We Forgive

Please stand

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION                                                           hymnal page 15

When we confess to God that we have failed to live up to the perfect standards in his law, the pastor announces the perfect forgiveness of sins won for us by Jesus.

LORD, HAVE MERCY                                                                                                                hymnal page 15

The Church brings her concerns and prayers to a loving Father in heaven, who has shown great mercy to us and promised to hear our ardent cries for help.

GLORY BE TO GOD                                                                                                                   hymnal page 16

This song of praise reminds us of the wonderful things God has done for us, not the least of which is the salvation he gives through Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: O risen Lord, you came to your disciples and took away their fears with your word of peace. Come to us also by Word and sacrament, and banish our fears with the comforting assurance of your abiding presence; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Please be seated for the day’s Scripture readings

XT H E   W O R D X

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                                         Deuteronomy 30: 9-14

Summary: Moses reminded the Israelites of the demands of God’s law

Then the LORD your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The LORD will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your fathers, if you obey the LORD your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.  It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”  Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”  No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

PSALM 25                                                                                                                                         hymnal page 74

The lectern side sings the first line, the pulpit side sings the second line, and all sing the refrain and Gloria.

SECOND LESSON                                                                    Colossians 1:1-14 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: The gospel produces a heart of faith and a life of love

When Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colosse:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints–the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.   You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.  And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.  For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                      Deuteronomy 30:14

Alleluia. The Word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Please stand

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                             Luke 10:25-37

Summary: The parable of the good Samaritan

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“What is written in the Law?” he replied.  “How do you read it?” He answered: “`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ {Deut. 6:5}; and, `Love your neighbor as yourself.’ {Lev.19:18}”

“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied.  “Do this and you will live.”

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers.  They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.  A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.  So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.  But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.  He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.  Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.  The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper.  `Look after him,’ he said, `and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

Jesus Sends Out Seventy-two Men to Proclaim Peace – “Peace,” or “shalom” (Hebrew), is more than the absence of hostility between God and us. It is wholeness in every way, bought by the blood of Christ. Today’s lessons show the part we all have in proclaiming God’s peace near and far.

PSALM OF THE DAY                                                          Psalm 63: In the Morning I Will Sing

This morning psalm brings to mind the Lord’s abiding presence and unending love through all of life’s ways.

Pastor and congregation sing in unison.

Verses:

T H E   S E R V I C E   O F   T H E   W O R D

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

XT H E   W O R D X

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST  READING                                                                                               Isaiah 66:10-14

Summary: Isaiah prophesies the glories of the New Testament Church

“Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad for her,
    all you who love her;
rejoice greatly with her,
all you who mourn over her.
For you will nurse and be satisfied
    at her comforting breasts;
you will drink deeply
and delight in her overflowing abundance.”

For this is what the Lord says:

“I will extend peace to her like a river,
    and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream;
you will nurse and be carried on her arm
    and dandled on her knees.
As a mother comforts her child,
    so will I comfort you;
and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

When you see this, your heart will rejoice
    and you will flourish like grass;
the hand of the Lord will be made known to his servants,
but his fury will be shown to his foes.

SECOND READING                                                                              Galatians 6:1-10, 14-16

Summary: There will be a harvest of Christ’s Kingdom as we reflect His gift of peace and do good

to all

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whichthe world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—tothe Israel of God.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                                 Luke 8:15

Alleluia. Happy are they who hear the Word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience. Alleluia.

GOSPEL READING                                              Luke 10:1-12, 16-20 (sermon text underlined)

Summary: Jesus sends out the Seventy-two

After this the Lord appointed seventy-twoothers and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

“Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”

He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON                                                                          2 Samuel 11:26–12:10,13-15

Summary: David needed forgiveness; Nathan proclaimed it

When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.  After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son.  But the thing David had done displeased the LORD.

The LORD sent Nathan to David.  When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.  The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought.  He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children.  It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms.  It was like a daughter to him.

“Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”

David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!  He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.”

Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!  This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: `I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.   I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms.  I gave you the house of Israel and Judah.  And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.  Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes?  You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own.  You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.’

Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.”

Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin.  You are not going to die.  But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt, the son born to you will die.”

After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill.

PSALM 72                                                                                                                                           hymnal page 93

The lectern side sings the first line, the pulpit side sings the second line, and everyone sing the refrains and Gloria.

EPISTLE LESSON                                                                                                                        Galatians 2:11-21

Summary: We are justified by faith in Christ

When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was clearly in the wrong.  Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles.  But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.  The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew.  How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

“We who are Jews by birth and not `Gentile sinners’ know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.  So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

“If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin?  Absolutely not!  If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker.  For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.  I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                          (today’s sermon text) Luke 7: 36-50

Jesus was anointed by a sinful woman who had been forgiven

Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.  When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears.  Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is– that she is a sinner.”

Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

“Two men owed money to a certain moneylender.  One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.  Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house.  You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.  You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet.  You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet.  Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven– for she loved much.  But he who has been forgiven little loves little.”

Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

2ND ANNUAL ST JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH-PRINCETON SOCCER CAMP July 15-17 – “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13, 14). Soccer is a difficult game that requires perseverance. But it is hard to persevere without a clear goal in mind. In the same way, life is very difficult and requires perseverance. But it is hard to persevere without a clear goal in mind. The Bible says that only goal worth striving for is to know Jesus and be called heavenward in his name.  Your children are invited to a three-day camp where they will learn how to persevere on and off the soccer field. Drills, exercises, and scrimmages will help them set goals for soccer. Breaks for devotions, music and other activities will help them set goals for life as they grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ their Savior.  Soccer camp begins with a meal each evening at 5 and each camp participant will receive a T-shirt and soccer socks. And it’s all FREE! Boys and girls, ages 3 through 12 are welcome! This year we are asking your child to bring their own water bottle with them to the camp each evening. Register by calling 920-295-4400 Monday-Thursday from 8:00am to 1:00pm

PSALM OF THE DAY                                                               Psalm 30

Pastor and congregation sing in unison.

T H E   W O R D

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST  READING                                                                             1 Kings 17:17-24

Summary: Elijah raises the widow’s son

Sometime later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing.  She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?”

“Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.  Then he cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?”

Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the LORD, “O LORD my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”

The LORD heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.  Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, “Look, your son is alive!”

Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.”

SECOND READING                                                      Galatians 1:11-24

Summary: God called Paul and changed him from a persecutor into a preacher

I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.  I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus.

Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days. I saw none of the other apostles-only James, the Lord’s brother. I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie. Later I went to Syria and Cilicia. I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. They only heard the report: “The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” And they praised God because of me.

VERSE OF THE DAY             2 Corinthians 5:19

Alleluia!  God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.  Alleluia!

GOSPEL READING                                            Luke 7:11-17

Summary: Jesus raises a widow’s son

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out-the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.  When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

TASTE OF MISSIONS—An Event Meant for the Whole Family!  Join us on July 13, 2019, at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wis., for the first annual Taste of Missions event! Starting at 12:00 P.M., sample ethnic cuisine from some of our mission fields while enjoying fellowship and presentations from home and world missionaries alike. Meet former missionaries and committee members who have served WELS Missions and hear stories of God’s magnificent grace in action at home and abroad. View displays, participate in family-friendly activities coordinated by our missionaries, and ask questions about the ups and downs of mission work during a panel discussion. We will conclude the event at 4:00 P.M. with a special worship service celebrating the blessings the Lord has showered on WELS Missions. Registration is $5 per person, with children under the age of five attending for free.  Register by June 30 at wels.net/tasteofmissions2019

Welcome to God’s house!  May God bless our worship together.

Jesus’ Marvels at a Foreigner’s Faith – In our first and third lessons, God shows joy in welcoming sinners of all nations to him. In the second lesson, we begin a series of readings from Paul’s letter to the saints in Galatia (an area today we would call central Turkey).

Morning Praise, composed by Marty Haugen, is based on the historic service called “Matins.” Joined to Christ, our risen Lord, we glorify God as we rise to the activities of this new day.

PASTOR’S GREETING

OPENING HYMN 756                                                                     We Walk By Faith and Not By Sight

Cantor sings stanza 1, congregation sings stanzas 2-5

Please stand

L: Pastor                                    C: Congregation & Cantors

COME, OH, COME, LET US SING TO THE LORD

An arrangement of Psalm 95, this song of praise reminds us of the many blessings that come to us from the hands of our Creator God.

After the cantors have sung the refrain once, the pastor and congregation join in singing the refrain.  The cantors will sing the verses.

Please be seated

PSALM OF THE DAY                                                          Psalm 63: In the Morning I Will Sing

This morning psalm brings to mind the Lord’s abiding presence and unending love through all of life’s ways.

After the cantors have sung the refrain once, the pastor and congregation join in singing the refrain.                The cantors will sing the verses.

Refrain:

Verses:

T H E   S E R V I C E   O F   T H E   W O R D

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

XT H E   W O R D X

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST  READING                                                                                     1 Kings 8:22-23, 41-43

Summary: Solomon’s prayer for the foreigner

Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven and said: “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below-you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way.

“As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name–for men will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm-when he comes and prays toward this temple, then hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.”

SECOND READING                                                                                         Galatians 1:1-10

Summary: There is only one gospel for the world

Paul, an apostle– sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead– and all the brothers with me,

To the churches in Galatia:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel– which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.  But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!  As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?  Or am I trying to please men?  If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                          Psalm 119:105

Alleluia. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Alleluia.

Please stand

GOSPEL READING                                                                                                Luke 7:1-10

Summary: The faith of the Roman centurion

When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.  There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.  The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.  When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”  So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.  That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you.  But say the word, and my servant will be healed.  For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.  I tell this one, `Go,’ and he goes; and that one, `Come,’ and he comes.  I say to my servant, `Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”  Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Amen.
