PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God, you know that we are surrounded by many dangers and that we often stumble and fall. GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY In our Gospel lesson (today’s sermon text), Jesus calls Peter away from his former career as a fisherman. From now on he will fish for people. Still today, God calls us to trust in Jesus. How does God call? Via strange feelings that pop up within us? No. God calls by messengers who speak his Word, by the power of his Spirit.
OLD TESTAMENT: ISAIAH 6:1-8
The call of Isaiah
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”
Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

EPISTLE: 1 CORINTHIANS 14:12b-20
Gifts that build up the church
Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.
For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.

GOSPEL: LUKE 5:1-11 (today’s sermon text)
Jesus calls his first disciples
One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
After the Gospel, all sing: “Praise be to you, O Christ!”

MEN’S BIBLE CLASS – A strange thing happened on the road to Damascus, and thank the Lord that it did! God reached out and saved the man we know as St. Paul. God still reaches out through him today. We are reading about it in the book of Acts. 6:30PM on Tuesdays, in the church basement.
“Grace—Hmong outreach in Vietnam” special offering – Sunday 2/17/19 at Emmanuel & St. John’s—Montello We will be hosting a special “Grace—Hmong outreach in Vietnam Sunday” on 2/17/19 to support the opportunity WELS has to build and operate a theological training facility in communist Vietnam. This facility in Hanoi would allow our synod to train the leaders of the Hmong Fellowship Church (HFC), a church body of more than 100,000 members. ART FOR DINNER At this year’s Art for Dinner event, we were able to raise a total of $7,274.87! Thank you to all who attended, donated and volunteered their time and efforts to St. John’s. What a wonderful night of food, fellowship and fun!
