XG O D ’ S W O R D F O R T O D A Y X The Ascended Lord Rules His Church – What is Christ doing for his church? The readings this Sunday answer that question. As the church awaits his return, Jesus continues to rule. Not only does he pray for us above, but here below he also guides and directs the preaching of the gospel. He wants the entire world to know and believe in him as their Savior. He uses us to make his name known throughout the world.

Summary: Paul’s vision of the man of Macedonia

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

AMMO BOX Two holidays, Memorial Day and Veterans Day, we set out the Ammo boxes to raise funds for the Lutheran Military Support Group (LMSG). The funds go to support Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), spiritual counseling, local congregational LMSG, projects, European Chaplain Support, Military Contact Pastor Training, the National Chaplain’s Office, Pastoral travel expenses to remote military families and to mission congregations next to military installations. Our congregation has personal experience with some of these things explained above. The Ammo cans are out today. VBS This year’s Vacation Bible School will be June 24-28 at St. John’s. Camp Phillip will be hosting again! We are accepting 3K-8^th graders! 3K/4K will run from 8:00am-11:30am. Kindergarten-8^th grade will run 8:00am-2:00pm. Stop in or call the office 297-2866 to register today!

OUR KIDS GAME $931.11 TO MISSIONS THIS YEAR The mission projects of our day school, Little Lambs, and Sunday School kids have been completed for 2018-2019. Kids C.A.R.E. mission gift given by our day school and Little Lambs students totaled $594.07 for the home mission project: Kids Summer Bible Camps. This amount will be pooled with gifts from kids all over the U.S. and presented at the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society Convention, June 27-30, in Des Moines, Iowa. St. John’s Sunday School students’ mission gift totaled $337.04 for our WELS Camp Phillip in Wautoma.

TASTE OF MISSIONS—An Event Meant for the Whole Family! Join us on July 13, 2019, at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wis., for the first annual Taste of Missions event! Starting at 12:00 P.M., sample ethnic cuisine from some of our mission fields while enjoying fellowship and presentations from home and world missionaries alike. Meet former missionaries and committee members who have served WELS Missions and hear stories of God’s magnificent grace in action at home and abroad. View displays, participate in family-friendly activities coordinated by our missionaries, and ask questions about the ups and downs of mission work during a panel discussion. We will conclude the event at 4:00 P.M. with a special worship service celebrating the blessings the Lord has showered on WELS Missions. Not at all by their deserving it, but by his declaring it. God’s peace is so profound and his willingness to receive us as his children so sincere, that Jesus even assures us that he and his Father will come to us and make their home within us.

FIRST LESSON Acts 14:8-18 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: Paul heals the crippled man at Lystra

In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.

When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: “Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them. In the past, he let all nations go their own way. Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead.

Summary: The New Jerusalem

It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

AMMO BOX Memorial Day is tomorrow and that is one of two holidays (the other Veteran’s Day) where we set out the Ammo boxes to raise funds for the Lutheran Military Support Group (LMSG). The funds go to support Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), spiritual counseling, local congregational LMSG, projects, European Chaplain Support, Military Contact Pastor Training, the National Chaplain’s Office, Pastoral travel expenses to remote military families and to mission congregations next to military installations. Our congregation has personal experience with some of these things explained above. The Ammo cans are out today, May 26 and will be next Sunday, June 2. KUNDE FUNDRAISER “Tragedy struck our family last month. As a result of blood clots and infection, Jim’s lower right leg had to be amputated at the end of April. Not only is this emotionally devastating for the family, but there is substantial financial stress involved too. Jim has mounting medical bills relating to the med-flight from Calumet to Wausau, hospital stays, surgery, etc. but also loss of income since Jim can no longer work. Jim has worked all his life at jobs that were very physical, such as firefighter, EMT, Sheriff’s Deputy, Hazmat, and most recently, as a baker, and manual labor. Even with a prosthesis sometime in the future, it is questionable if Jim will be able to find work to help support the family. Additionally, they have four children under the age of 18 still living at home, with the youngest being 7 years old.” Diana’s income (Jim’s wife) is the only income they have left and it is not enough to cover household expenses. This is quite a burden on her and the family doesn’t know where to turn to. Also, their house is not set up to facilitate someone with this type of disability and will need substantial modifications made to accommodate Jim and allow him to be as independent as possible. Any help you can give this family would be so helpful. Thank you.

Meet former missionaries and committee members who have served WELS Missions and hear stories of God’s magnificent grace in action at home and abroad. View displays, participate in family-friendly activities coordinated by our missionaries, and ask questions about the ups and downs of mission work during a panel discussion. We will conclude the event at 4:00 P.M. with a special worship service celebrating the blessings the Lord has showered on WELS Missions. Summary: When Jews reject God’s gift of life and love, Paul and Barnabas turn to the Gentiles

On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him.

⁴⁶Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

How can God keep them all straight? How can God keep his eye on you in particular and hear your prayers? He has no trouble at all—and not only because he is Almighty. Jesus is your Good Shepherd. He knows you as well as he knows the Father, and as the Father knows you. That’s why he laid down his life for you.

Summary: In Antioch the Apostle Paul spreads the good news of Jesus the Good Shepherd

After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak.”

Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: “Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.

They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”

Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

FIRST LESSON Acts 9:1-19a

Summary: Saul’s conversion

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.

In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”

“Yes, Lord,” he answered.

The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”

“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”

But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”

Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

Summary: The risen Lord’s appearance in Galilee

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee.It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”¹¹So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Acts 5:12, 17-32

Summary: The disciples were persecuted for using the keys

The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.

Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people the full message of this new life.”

At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin– the full assembly of the elders of Israel– and sent to the jail for the apostles. But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported, “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this.

Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.

Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”

Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men! The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead– whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

John,

To the seven churches in the province of Asia:

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father– to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen.

I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone “like a son of man,” {Daniel 7:13} dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

GOSPEL LESSON John 20: 19-31

Summary: Jesus appears to his followers and gives them the keys to His kingdom

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

TEEN CONFIRMATION WEEK On Thursday 5/2 6:00pm at St. John’s, the 2019 Teen Confirmation Class (Brianna Daniels, Madeline Kraus, Lily Mann & Joshua Schwochert) and Pastor Z will lead a Teen Confirmation Examination Service reviewing key Bible teachings as summarized in Luther’s Small Catechism. Following the service, all are invited to the lower level of church for refreshments and a presentation of confirmation quilt gifts. On Sunday 5/5 10:00am at St. John’s, our confirmands will be received as communicant members. “Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:1)

XG O D ’ S W O R D F O R T O D A Y X As “morning breaks upon the tomb” (CW 159) its gaping entrance and vacant depths stir a mixture of emotions among Jesus’ followers. But with proclamation of the resurrection, ignorance turns to understanding and sorrow changes to joy. With the rising of the sun faith-filled hearts soar to proclaim the angels’ message: He is risen!

Remember Jesus Christ: He Has Risen

The Easter Festival Service visits Jesus’ empty tomb. The fact that Christ is risen brings joy to Christians who watched Jesus’ sufferings, death and burial. Since the darkness of Good Friday is the last worship experience before Easter, the day of our Lord’s resurrection once again brings the everlasting light of Christ and his work into focus. Today as we celebrate our resurrected Savior, hearts and voices can sing with confident joy in our risen Lord Jesus Christ!

P: Beloved in the Lord, we have gathered to celebrate with festive joy the resurrection of our Lord from the dead. As we remember our Lord’s passing over from death to life, it is fitting for us to take to heart St. Paul’s words which talk about our sin: “Get rid of the old yeast, that you may be a new batch without yeast—as you really are.” Therefore, let us confess our sins, and ask our Father to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. He was delivered over to death because of our sins and was raised to life on account of our justification. For his sake, God, our Father, has had mercy on us, and has forgiven us all our sins. Therefore, as forgiven children of God, let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast of sin, but with the bread of sincerity and truth.

As “morning breaks upon the tomb” (CW 159) its gaping entrance and vacant depths stir a mixture of emotions among Jesus’ followers. But with proclamation of the resurrection, ignorance turns to understanding and sorrow changes to joy. With the rising of the sun faith-filled hearts soar to proclaim the angels’ message: He is risen!

Treasures in Heaven

EASTER GREETING

Don’t be alarmed!…Why do you seek the living among the dead?…You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified….He is not here; he has risen!…See the place where they have laid him…Remember how he told you while he was still with you in Galilee: The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again…He is Risen!

THE EASTER ACCOUNT John 20:1-18

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. ²So she left and ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she told them, “and we don’t know where they put him!” – ³So Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. ⁴The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. ⁵Bending over, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in. – ⁶Then Simon Peter, who was following him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there. ⁷The cloth that had been on Jesus’ head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself. ⁸Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, also entered. He saw and believed. ⁹(They still did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.) – ¹⁰Then the disciples went back to their homes. – ¹¹But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, weeping. PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: Almighty God, who through your only‑begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord’s resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life‑giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

+ Treasures in Heaven +

Jesus taught us to lay up treasures in heaven, not on earth. His resurrection reminds us that while the things of earth are temporary, we have the precious gift of everlasting life with him awaiting us.

P: In Colossians 3:1-4, St. Paul writes: Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

C: Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

P: In Matthew 6 Jesus instructed us in his Sermon on the Mount to store up treasures in heaven.

C: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. (6:19-20)

P: The reason for doing so links this command to the desire of our hearts.

C: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (6:21)

P: How do we store up treasures in heaven? We are to treasure the Lord Jesus most of all.

C: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24)

P: When we live sacrificially for Jesus’ sake or serve Him by serving the body of Christ, we store up treasure in heaven. Even seemingly small acts of service do not go unnoticed by God.

C: If anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward. (Matthew 10:42)

P: The treasures that await the child of God will far outweigh any trouble, inconvenience, or persecution we may face. Romans 8:18 says, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” We can serve the Lord wholeheartedly, knowing that God is the One keeping score, and His reward will be abundantly gracious.

C: Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. (1 Corinth.15:58)

P: The bottom line is this: It’s not all about us. Though the things of this world may appear to hold all we want or need, God knows this is not so. The apostle Paul knew this when he wrote in Colossians 3, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

C: Then, by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, through faith we can put off our old self and put on the new-creation to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

P: Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave transforms the lives of those who believe in Him for salvation.

C: When we pray, let our words be humble and our thoughts centered on the magnitude of what God has done for us through the redemptive work of His Son.

Let us pray together:

Dearest Father, many times we ask you for unreasonable things with which to satisfy ourselves. Remind us on this Day of Resurrection that only you give what is good. Help us to live-and pray-as you would have us do. And teach us to seek only those things that are above. We pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.

EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 3:8–14

Summary: In Christ we can forget what is behind and press on toward the heavenly goal

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Summary: The parable of the tenant farmers

He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

“Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’

“But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “May this never be!”

Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written: ” ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone? Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.”

The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

OUR SMALL OFFERINGS (from a member)

A young boy elbows his way to the front of the crowd and tugs on a man’s sleeve. Andrew looks down to see the boy holding out an open sack. Inside Andrew sees five small loaves of bread nestled beside two cooked fish. “I heard the rabbi ask for food,” the boy says with a shy shrug. “My mother packed this for me, and—she said I should share with someone who doesn’t have anything.”

Eyebrows raised, Andrew places a hand on the boy’s shoulder and walks him over to Jesus. Jesus turns and twinkles a smile down at the child; Andrew flashes Jesus a sheepish grin. “So…this boy has offered to share his lunch, but” —he casts a glance over his shoulder at the thousands of people milling around behind him, waiting to hear the rabbi’s next words— “how far will they go among so many?”

Jesus tousles the boy’s dark hair and gives him a smile and a wink. “Thank you, son. This is just what I need.” The boy looks down at his sandals, blushing with pride. Rubbing His palms together, Jesus turns to Andrew with an excited—almost mischievous—glint in his eye. Andrew has seen this look before; a tingle of anticipation floods his veins. With barely contained glee, Jesus says, “Have the people sit down.”

He rolls up His sleeves.

We all know the rest of the famous account in John 6—how Jesus goes on to turn a little boy’s lunch into a feast for thousands. He makes so much food that the disciples collect twelve basketfuls of leftovers!

We often look at our gifts—our talents, our possessions, our skills, our wisdom—and think, “They aren’t worth much. How far can they really go?” Let us never underestimate what God can do with our “small” offerings. We don’t have to give Him the biggest thing, the best thing, the shiniest thing—we just have to give Him whatever we have to offer. The smallest gift is still a treasure in His eyes. Our gifts may be small, but our God is big. And His powerful hands can take our small gifts and multiply them. Our mighty God can turn a little into a lot—more than we could ever imagine. What small gift can you offer to Jesus today?

Worship the Lord – the Purpose of Worship

If you ask members about the reason why we worship, the various answers include “praising God, giving thanks, and singing and praying together.” It is true that all these things happen during worship, but are they really the purpose of worship?

As Lutherans, we know that we “cannot by our own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ or come to him.” Faith, forgiveness, and the sacraments are all received. Worship is primarily God serving his people with Word and Sacrament. Simply put, God gives, we receive. Christian worship enables people to receive the riches of Christ.

What does Christian worship look like? Well, that depends! In churches it includes hymns and liturgies, lessons and creeds. In school it can include Bible-based action songs and murals on the walls. Understanding worship’s purpose will help us understand our various worship practices.

“But I want to feel closer to God. I need emotion.” It’s true, we often feel emotion when we worship. (O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder…” CW 256:1) These human emotions, however, are not the purpose of worship. Rather, they spring from the heart of worship: the Gospel.

It is hard to find the right balance of church doctrine and expressive worship. In our defense of solid doctrine, it is easy to forget that God created us with human emotions. If we want more expressive worship, it becomes easy to downplay the importance of correct teaching.

If worship is my primary opportunity to receive the riches of Christ and to proclaim the Gospel to my neighbor, then, in Christian love, I need to put aside my personal preferences and focus on my neighbor’s interests above my own.

Satan knows that if he can confuse the purpose of worship, he will get us to take our focus off of Christ and to place it on our emotion or our reaction to Christ. Instead of a purpose-driven church, or a mission- minded church, let us strive to be a Christ-centered church! Everything else flows from there.

We gather in worship for a very specific purpose; to receive the riches of Christ! To God be the glory!

God’s Amazing Grace Is Received by Faith – Today we see the sincerity of our Savior’s love. God keeps waiting to show his children mercy. God is ready, even anxious to forgive us. He pleads that we come to him and be saved. Such constant and free forgiveness doesn’t make sense to human logic. But God’s ways are greater than our ways. If his grace were not so great, it could not cover all of our sins. We rejoice in God’s amazing grace which always gives forgiveness for all sins.

The Lord, the God of free and faithful grace is mentioned five times in this reading. His anger has turned to comfort and salvation. Joyful singing replaces fear. The Holy One of God has become our salvation.

So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

THE APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

WEDNESDAY LENTEN DEVOTIONS Join us as we gather for Lenten Devotions: 3:30pm at Emmanuel and 6:30pm at St. John’s under this year’s theme: “Three Words of Truth.” A soup supper will also be served from 4:30-6:15pm in the lower level of St. John’s. “Jesus, I will ponder now on your holy passion…” (Hymn 98) APRIL 3 HOST: Ladies Aid WHAT’S ON THE MENU?: meatloaf dinner, hashbrown casserole, corn, dinner rolls, homemade desserts & drinks.

EASTER FOR KIDS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

VOLUNTEER to help pack Easter baskets on Thursday, April 11, time TBA. VOLUNTEER to help set up the Bible Giveaway on Friday, April 12, time TBA. VOLUNTEER to make jello jigglers for the Easter for Kids Lunch on Saturday, April 13.

VOLUNTEER to prep crafts during the week prior to the event. VOLUNTEER to help at the event on Saturday, April 13, 9 a.m. to Noon. (Grade 7 through Adult – girls-boys-women-men–all welcome! Thrivent T-Shirts for all helpers)

REGISTRATION FOR EASTER FOR KIDS Any child, age 3 through Grade 6, is welcome to attend Easter for Kids at St. John’s on Saturday, April 13. This is an outreach program–it would be great if St. John’s & Emmanuel kids who attend would invite a non-member or unchurched friend! Register online www.stjohnsmontello.org. Get registration forms at both churches, in Monday Magazine, on church & school Facebook. This year’s theme is “Parade & Praise for the King!” Story rhyme time, singing & movement, crafts, egg coloring, snacks, & of course, a parade will bring the true meaning of Easter to the children. Register by Fri., April 5.
