XG O D ’ S     W O R D    F O R     T O D A Y X The Ascended Lord Rules His Church – What is Christ doing for his church? The readings this Sunday answer that question. As the church awaits his return, Jesus continues to rule. Not only does he pray for us above, but here below he also guides and directs the preaching of the gospel. He wants the entire world to know and believe in him as their Savior. He uses us to make his name known throughout the world.

XP R E P A R A T I O N   F O R   W O R S H I P X

We prepare ourselves to worship the one Savior God by expressing our humble repentance, offering our fervent prayers and singing our thankful hymns of praise.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Almighty God, your Son our Savior was taken up in glory and intercedes for us at your right hand. Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                    Acts 16:6-10 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: Paul’s vision of the man of Macedonia

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

PSALM 8                                                                                                                                              hymnal page 67

The congregation sings the refrains, verses and Gloria.

SECOND LESSON                                                                                                 Revelation 22:12-17, 20

Summary: Jesus is coming soon

“Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

“Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                                         John 14:18

Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Please stand

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                             John 17:20-26

Summary: Jesus prays for all believers

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

XG O D ’ S     W O R D    F O R     T O D A Y X The Risen One Promises Us Unique Peace – In today’s lessons we hear about peace between us and God. How can rebels find peace with their holy Lord and judge? Not at all by their deserving it, but by his declaring it. God’s peace is so profound and his willingness to receive us as his children so sincere, that Jesus even assures us that he and his Father will come to us and make their home within us.

When we confess to God that we have failed to live up to the perfect standards in his law, the pastor announces the perfect forgiveness of sins won for us by Jesus.

LORD, HAVE MERCY                                                                                                                hymnal page 27

The Church brings her concerns and prayers to a loving Father in heaven, who has shown great mercy to us and promised to hear our ardent cries for help.

O LORD, OUR LORD                                                                                                                 hymnal page 28

This song of praise reminds us of the wonderful things God has done for us, not the least of which is the salvation he gives through Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Father of lights, every good and perfect gift comes from you. Inspire us to think those things that are true and long for those things that are good, that we may always make our petitions according to your gracious will; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

XT H E   W O R D X

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                            Acts 14:8-18 (today’s sermon text)

Summary:  Paul heals the crippled man at Lystra

In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed and called out, “Stand up on your feet!” At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.

When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!” Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: “Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them. In the past, he let all nations go their own way. Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead.

PSALM 65                                                                                                                                           hymnal page 89

Lectern side sings the first line, pulpit side sings the second line, everyone sings refrains and Gloria.

SECOND LESSON                                                                                             Revelation 21: 10-14, 22, 23

Summary: The New Jerusalem

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                                         John 14:23

Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.  Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Please stand

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                             John 14:23-29

Summary: Jesus promises the Holy Spirit

Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I

leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

EMMANUEL OFFERING OPTIONS In addition to the traditional offering envelope option for our weekly offerings, Emmanuel is inviting any members to consider direct payment (weekly or monthly) from your bank’s checking or savings account to the church’s account.  If you are interested in this option, please pick up an application form in the church entry, and return the completed form to our church treasurer, Wayne Stelter, who will complete the form with the church’s bank routing and account numbers and submit your request to the bank.  Please state on the application form when you would like to begin and if you want weekly or monthly auto-payments.

KUNDE FUNDRAISER “Tragedy struck our family last month.  As a result of blood clots and infection, Jim’s lower right leg had to be amputated at the end of April.  Not only is this emotionally devastating for the family, but there is substantial financial stress involved too.  Jim has mounting medical bills relating to the med-flight from Calumet to Wausau, hospital stays, surgery, etc. but also loss of income since Jim can no longer work.  Jim has worked all his life at jobs that were very physical, such as firefighter, EMT, Sheriff’s Deputy, Hazmat, and most recently, as a baker, and manual labor.  Even with a prosthesis sometime in the future, it is questionable if Jim will be able to find work to help support the family. Additionally, they have four children under the age of 18 still living at home, with the youngest being 7 years old.” Diana’s income (Jim’s wife) is the only income they have left and it is not enough to cover household expenses.  This is quite a burden on her and the family doesn’t know where to turn to.   Also, their house is not set up to facilitate someone with this type of disability and will need substantial modifications made to accommodate Jim and allow him to be as independent as possible. Any help you can give this family would be so helpful. Thank you.

FROM A MEMBER “Weep but briefly for your loved one as they enter into the Kingdom of God, for they now possess a joy and peace that is unattainable on God’s earthly realm. Rather, rejoice in their everlasting and total happiness, for their eyes have seen God.”

We prepare ourselves to worship the one Savior God by expressing our humble repentance, offering our fervent prayers and singing our thankful hymns of praise.

OPENING HYMN 154:1-3       Alleluia, Alleluia, Give Thanks (in place of “Morning Hymn”)

MORNING PRAISE LITURGY                           hymnal page 45

“Morning Praise” is based on the historic service called “Matins.” Joined to Christ, our risen Lord, we glorify God as we rise to the activities of this new day.

Please be seated for today’s scripture readings

T H E   W O R D

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                Acts 13:44-52

Summary: When Jews reject God’s gift of life and love, Paul and Barnabas turn to the Gentiles

On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

“‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. So they shook the dust off their feet as a warning to them and went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

PSALM 145                                    hymnal page 119

Men sing first line, women sing second line, all sing refrains and Gloria

SECOND LESSON                                                                                                      Revelation 21:1-6

Summary: In a glimpse of heaven, John sees the reign of Christ and the ruin of Satan

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                 John 14:6

Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord. Alleluia.

Please stand

GOSPEL LESSON                              John 13: 31-35 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: In the upper room, Christ gives his friends the new command: Love one another”

When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

“My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Summary: In Antioch the Apostle Paul spreads the good news of Jesus the Good Shepherd

After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue rulers sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement for the people, please speak.”

Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: “Brothers, children of Abraham, and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.

“We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ” ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father.’

SECOND LESSON                                                                     Revelation 7:9-19 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: In a glimpse of heaven, John sees the Good Shepherd now as

the Victorious Lamb

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!”

Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                                         John 10:14

Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                             John 10:22-30

Summary: Jesus describes the loving relationship he as the Good Shepherd has for

his sheep

Then came the Feast of Dedicationat Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. The Jews gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

ACH What is ACH? Automated Clearing House is an electronic payments network use by individuals, businesses, financial institutions and government organizations. The network functions as an efficient, electronic alternative to paper checks. It allows funds to be electronically debited or credited to a checking account, savings account, financial institution general ledger account or credited to a loan account. FIRST LESSON                                                                                  Acts 9:1-19a

Summary: Saul’s conversion

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.

In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”

“Yes, Lord,” he answered.

The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”

“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”

But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”

Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength.

PSALM 67                                                                                      hymnal page 91

The congregation sings the refrains, verses and Gloria.

SECOND LESSON                                                        Revelation 5:11-14 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: John’s vison of the heavenly chorus

Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”

14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                              Luke 24: 32

Alleluia. Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. Our hearts were burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL LESSON                                          John 21:1-14

Summary: The risen Lord’s appearance in Galilee

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

ACH What is ACH? Automated Clearing House is an electronic payments network used by individuals, businesses, financial institutions and government organizations. The network functions as an efficient, electronic alternative to paper checks. It allows funds to be electronically debited or credited to a checking account, savings account, financial institution general ledger account or credited to a loan account. In our particular case, we would like to make this an available service as an offering option starting in May. Look for bulletins to come for the ACH Application.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON                                                                                                   Acts 5:12, 17-32

Summary: The disciples were persecuted for using the keys

The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people.  And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade.

Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.  They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.  “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people the full message of this new life.”

At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin– the full assembly of the elders of Israel– and sent to the jail for the apostles.  But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.  So they went back and reported, “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”  On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this.

Then someone came and said, “Look!  The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.”  At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles.  They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.

Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.  “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said.  “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”

Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men!  The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead– whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree.  God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.  We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

EPISTLE LESSON                                                                                                                   Revelation 1:4-18

Summary: John receives a vision from the Lord

John,

To the seven churches in the province of Asia:

Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father– to him be glory and power for ever and ever!  Amen.

Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him.  So shall it be!  Amen.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.  On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, which said: “Write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.”

I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me.  And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone “like a son of man,” {Daniel 7:13} dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest.  His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.  His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.  In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.  Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid.  I am the First and the Last.  I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever!  And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                                         John 20: 19-31

Summary: Jesus appears to his followers and gives them the keys to His kingdom

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”   After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.  The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!  As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”  And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.   So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”  Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands.  Reach out your hand and put it into my side.  Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.  But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

XG O D ’ S     W O R D    F O R     T O D A Y X As “morning breaks upon the tomb” (CW 159) its gaping entrance and vacant depths stir a mixture of emotions among Jesus’ followers. But with proclamation of the resurrection, ignorance turns to understanding and sorrow changes to joy. With the rising of the sun faith-filled hearts soar to proclaim the angels’ message: He is risen!

Remember Jesus Christ: He Has Risen

The Easter Festival Service visits Jesus’ empty tomb.  The fact that Christ is risen brings joy to Christians who watched Jesus’ sufferings, death and burial.  Since the darkness of Good Friday is the last worship experience before Easter, the day of our Lord’s resurrection once again brings the everlasting light of Christ and his work into focus.  Today as we celebrate our resurrected Savior, hearts and voices can sing with confident joy in our risen Lord Jesus Christ!

P:       Beloved in the Lord, we have gathered to celebrate with festive joy the resurrection of our Lord from the dead.  As we remember our Lord’s passing over from death to life, it is fitting for us to take to heart St. Paul’s words which talk about our sin:  “Get rid of the old yeast, that you may be a new batch without yeast—as you really are.”  Therefore, let us confess our sins, and ask our Father to forgive us.

C:       Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions.  I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good.  For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.  But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray:  Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P:       Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.  He was delivered over to death because of our sins and was raised to life on account of our justification.  For his sake, God, our Father, has had mercy on us, and has forgiven us all our sins.  Therefore, as forgiven children of God, let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast of sin, but with the bread of sincerity and truth.

RESPONSE HYMN 143                                                                                         He’s Risen, He’s Risen

All Sing:

THE FIRST LESSON                                                                                                                         Exodus 15:1-11

Summary: The Song of Moses after God delivered his people from their enemies.

15 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord: “I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea. “The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name. Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh’s officers are drowned in the Red Sea. The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone. Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy. “In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble. By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood up like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea. The enemy boasted, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.’ 10 But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11 Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you— majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

PSALM 118

The LORD is my strength and my song; *

   he has become my salvation.

The LORD’S right hand is lifted high; *

the LORD’S right hand has done mighty things!

I will not die but live, *

and will proclaim what the LORD has done.

Refrain

I will give you thanks, for you answered me; *

   you have become my salvation.

The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; *

the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

This is the day the LORD has made; *

let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, *

is now and will be forever. Amen.

THE SECOND LESSON                                                                                                               1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Summary: Christ is risen. This is what we preach, and this is what we believe.

15 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

THE GOSPEL                                                                                                                                          Luke 24:1-12

Summary: He is risen! Luke gives his account of the Day of Resurrection.

24 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, 11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

HYMN OF THE DAY 156                                                                Awake, My Heart, with Gladness

1            Awake, my heart, with gladness!  See what today is done;

Now, after gloom and sadness, Comes forth the glorious sun.

My Savior there was laid Where our bed must be made

When to the realms of light Our spirit wings its flight.

2           The foe in triumph shouted When Christ lay in the tomb.

But lo, he now is routed; His boast is turned to gloom.

For Christ again is free; In glorious victory

He who is strong to save Has triumphed o’er the grave.

3           This is a sight that gladdens— What peace it does impart!

Now nothing ever saddens the joy within my heart.

No gloom shall ever shake, no foe shall ever take

The hope which God’s own Son In love for me has won.

4           Now I will cling forever To Christ, my Savior true;

My Lord will leave me never, whate’er he passes through.

He rends death’s iron chain; He breaks through sin and pain.

He shatters hell’s dark thrall; I follow him through all.

5           He brings me to the portal That leads to bliss untold,

Whereon this rhyme immortal Is found in script of gold:

              “Who there my cross has shared Finds here a crown prepared;

Who there with me has died Shall here be glorified.”

All Sing:

2           He lives triumphant from the grave;

              He lives eternally to save.

              He lives all-glorious in the sky;

He lives exalted there on high.

Lectern Side Sing:

5           He lives to silence all my fears;

He lives to wipe away my tears.

              He lives to calm my troubled heart;

He lives all blessings to impart.

Pulpit Side Sing:

7           He lives and grants me daily breath;

He lives, and I shall conquer death.

              He lives my mansion to prepare;

He lives to bring my safely there.

All Sing:

8           He lives, all glory to his name!

He lives, my Jesus, still the same.

Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives:

As “morning breaks upon the tomb” (CW 159) its gaping entrance and vacant depths stir a mixture of emotions among Jesus’ followers. But with proclamation of the resurrection, ignorance turns to understanding and sorrow changes to joy. With the rising of the sun faith-filled hearts soar to proclaim the angels’ message: He is risen!

EASTER GREETING

Don’t be alarmed!…Why do you seek the living among the dead?…You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who was crucified….He is not here; he has risen!…See the place where they have laid him…Remember how he told you while he was still with you in Galilee: The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again…He is Risen!

HYMN 149 stanzas 1-4 Christ the Lord Is Risen Today

P: Christ is risen!

C: (spoken) He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, on this joyous resurrection morning, we celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ’s passing over from death to life. We celebrate his victory over death, and our deliverance from the bondage of sin and darkness to everlasting light.

C: Death has been swallowed up in victory! Alleluia!

THE EASTER ACCOUNT John 20:1-18

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she left and ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,” she told them, “and we don’t know where they put him!” – 3 So Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. 5 Bending over, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in. – 6 Then Simon Peter, who was following him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there. 7 The cloth that had been on Jesus’ head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, also entered. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.) – 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. – 11 But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, weeping. As she wept, she bent over, looking into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels in white clothes sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” – She told them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don’t know where they have laid him.” – 14 After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus. – 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” – Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you carried him off, tell me where you laid him, and I will get him.” – 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” – She turned and replied in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means, “Teacher”). 17 Jesus told her, “Do not continue to cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father—to my God and your God.’” – 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” She also told them the things he said to her. HYMN 141 At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing

OFFERING OF GIFTS AND PRAYERS

During this time, please sign our Friendship Registers and greet one another.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: Almighty God, who through your only‑begotten Son Jesus Christ overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord’s resurrection, may be raised from the death of sin by your life‑giving Spirit; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: (spoken) Amen.

+ Treasures in Heaven +

Jesus taught us to lay up treasures in heaven, not on earth. His resurrection reminds us that while the things of earth are temporary, we have the precious gift of everlasting life with him awaiting us.

P: In Colossians 3:1-4, St. Paul writes: Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

C: Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

HYMN 145 stanzas 1-3, 5 Jesus Lives! The Victory’s Won

P: In Matthew 6 Jesus instructed us in his Sermon on the Mount to store up treasures in heaven.

C: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. (6:19-20)

P: The reason for doing so links this command to the desire of our hearts.

C: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (6:21)

P: How do we store up treasures in heaven? We are to treasure the Lord Jesus most of all.

C: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24)

P: When we live sacrificially for Jesus’ sake or serve Him by serving the body of Christ, we store up treasure in heaven. Even seemingly small acts of service do not go unnoticed by God.

C: If anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward. (Matthew 10:42)

HYMN 143 stanzas 1, 4, 5 He’s Risen, He’s Risen

P: The treasures that await the child of God will far outweigh any trouble, inconvenience, or persecution we may face. Romans 8:18 says, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” We can serve the Lord wholeheartedly, knowing that God is the One keeping score, and His reward will be abundantly gracious.

C: Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. (1 Corinth.15:58)

P: The bottom line is this: It’s not all about us. Though the things of this world may appear to hold all we want or need, God knows this is not so. The apostle Paul knew this when he wrote in Colossians 3, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

C: Then, by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, through faith we can put off our old self and put on the new-creation to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

P: Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave transforms the lives of those who believe in Him for salvation.

C: When we pray, let our words be humble and our thoughts centered on the magnitude of what God has done for us through the redemptive work of His Son.

Let us pray together:

Dearest Father, many times we ask you for unreasonable things with which to satisfy ourselves. Remind us on this Day of Resurrection that only you give what is good. Help us to live-and pray-as you would have us do. And teach us to seek only those things that are above. We pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Offering of Gifts and Prayer

BLESSING

P: You have come again to the empty tomb. You are loved, forgiven, and made new. You are a resurrection people.

C: We have passed out of death into life!

P: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

C: (spoken) Amen.

THE RESURRECTION CHAPTER 1 Corinthians 15

50 Now I say this, brothers: Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, and what is perishable is not going to inherit what is imperishable. 51 Look, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 But once this perishable body has put on imperishability, and this mortal body has put on immortality, then what is written will be fulfilled: Death is swallowed up in victory .55 Death, where is your sting? Grave, where is your victory? 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! 58 Therefore, my dear brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

OPENING HYMN

Please stand

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION              hymnal page 15

When we confess to God that we have failed to live up to the perfect standards in his law, the pastor announces the perfect forgiveness of sins won for us by Jesus.

LORD, HAVE MERCY                                          hymnal page 15

The Church brings her concerns and prayers to a loving Father in heaven, who has shown great mercy to us and promised to hear our ardent cries for help.

GLORY BE TO GOD                                               hymnal page 16

This song of praise reminds us of the wonderful things God has done for us, not the least of which is the salvation he gives through Jesus Christ.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Eternal God and Father, help us to remember Jesus, who obeyed your will and bore the cross for our salvation that through his anguish, pain and death we may receive forgiveness of sins and inherit eternal life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

Please be seated for the day’s Scripture readings

SERVICE OF THE WORD

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON                            Isaiah 43:16-21

Summary: In our Lord we can forget the horrors of the past

This is what the LORD says—he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.

PSALM 73                                                                    hymnal page 94

Men sing first line, women sing second line, all sing refrains and Gloria

EPISTLE LESSON                                                       Philippians 3:8–14

Summary: In Christ we can forget what is behind and press on toward the heavenly goal

What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                             Mark 10:45

During the season of Lent, the “Alleluia” is omitted

“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Please stand

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

GOSPEL LESSON (today’s sermon text)                        Luke 20:9-19

Summary: The parable of the tenant farmers

He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

“Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’

“But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “May this never be!”

Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written: ” ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone? Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed.”

The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

CHRISTIAN ONE-LINERS (from a WELS member):  “We don’t change the message. The message changes us.”

OUR SMALL OFFERINGS (from a member)

A young boy elbows his way to the front of the crowd and tugs on a man’s sleeve. Andrew looks down to see the boy holding out an open sack. Inside Andrew sees five small loaves of bread nestled beside two cooked fish. “I heard the rabbi ask for food,” the boy says with a shy shrug. “My mother packed this for me, and—she said I should share with someone who doesn’t have anything.”

Eyebrows raised, Andrew places a hand on the boy’s shoulder and walks him over to Jesus. Jesus turns and twinkles a smile down at the child; Andrew flashes Jesus a sheepish grin. “So…this boy has offered to share his lunch, but” —he casts a glance over his shoulder at the thousands of people milling around behind him, waiting to hear the rabbi’s next words— “how far will they go among so many?”

Jesus tousles the boy’s dark hair and gives him a smile and a wink. “Thank you, son. This is just what I need.” The boy looks down at his sandals, blushing with pride. Rubbing His palms together, Jesus turns to Andrew with an excited—almost mischievous—glint in his eye. Andrew has seen this look before; a tingle of anticipation floods his veins. With barely contained glee, Jesus says, “Have the people sit down.”

     He rolls up His sleeves.

We all know the rest of the famous account in John 6—how Jesus goes on to turn a little boy’s lunch into a feast for thousands. He makes so much food that the disciples collect twelve basketfuls of leftovers!

We often look at our gifts—our talents, our possessions, our skills, our wisdom—and think, “They aren’t worth much. How far can they really go?” Let us never underestimate what God can do with our “small” offerings. We don’t have to give Him the biggest thing, the best thing, the shiniest thing—we just have to give Him whatever we have to offer. The smallest gift is still a treasure in His eyes. Our gifts may be small, but our God is big. And His powerful hands can take our small gifts and multiply them. Our mighty God can turn a little into a lot—more than we could ever imagine. What small gift can you offer to Jesus today?

Joint Worship Committee Update

Worship the Lord – the Purpose of Worship

If you ask members about the reason why we worship, the various answers include “praising God, giving thanks, and singing and praying together.” It is true that all these things happen during worship, but are they really the purpose of worship?

As Lutherans, we know that we “cannot by our own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ or come to him.” Faith, forgiveness, and the sacraments are all received.  Worship is primarily God serving his people with Word and Sacrament. Simply put, God gives, we receive. Christian worship enables people to receive the riches of Christ.

What does Christian worship look like? Well, that depends!  In churches it includes hymns and liturgies, lessons and creeds. In school it can include Bible-based action songs and murals on the walls. Understanding worship’s purpose will help us understand our various worship practices.

“But I want to feel closer to God. I need emotion.” It’s true, we often feel emotion when we worship. (O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder…” CW 256:1) These human emotions, however, are not the purpose of worship. Rather, they spring from the heart of worship: the Gospel.

It is hard to find the right balance of church doctrine and expressive worship.  In our defense of solid doctrine, it is easy to forget that God created us with human emotions. If we want more expressive worship, it becomes easy to downplay the importance of correct teaching.

If worship is my primary opportunity to receive the riches of Christ and to proclaim the Gospel to my neighbor, then, in Christian love, I need to put aside my personal preferences and focus on my neighbor’s interests above my own.

Satan knows that if he can confuse the purpose of worship, he will get us to take our focus off of Christ and to place it on our emotion or our reaction to Christ. Instead of a purpose-driven church, or a mission- minded church, let us strive to be a Christ-centered church! Everything else flows from there.

We gather in worship for a very specific purpose; to receive the riches of Christ! To God be the glory!

(Excerpts from “Worship the Lord” No. 36,”Worship is Really Purpose-Driven” by Aaron Christie)

MARCH 31, 2019

St. John’s & Emmanuel

Ev. Lutheran Church

Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH!

We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. Restrooms and nursery area are located the parish hall at Emmanuel and in the lower level and link-way at St. John’s. It’s nice to have you visit today. “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more, as you see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25) Welcome to God’s house! May God bless our worship together.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY

God’s Amazing Grace Is Received by Faith – Today we see the sincerity of our Savior’s love. God keeps waiting to show his children mercy. God is ready, even anxious to forgive us. He pleads that we come to him and be saved. Such constant and free forgiveness doesn’t make sense to human logic. But God’s ways are greater than our ways. If his grace were not so great, it could not cover all of our sins. We rejoice in God’s amazing grace which always gives forgiveness for all sins.

TODAY’S WORSHIP

Today’s worship is adapted from Divine Service II is a version of the historic liturgy of the Christian church.

OPENING HYMN 339 Today Your Mercy Calls Us

INVOCATION

The name of the Triune God and the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms.

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. (spoken)

CONFESSION

M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.

For faithless worrying and selfish pride,
For sins of habit and sins of choice,

For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,
You should cast me away from your presence forever.
O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

ABSOLUTION

The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the sins of penitent sinners” See John 20:21-23.

M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant:

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen. (spoken)

LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie Mark 10:47

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church.

M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy. (spoken)

M: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mercy.

M: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

M: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you.

C: Amen.

THE WORD

SALUTATION

This greeting has deep roots in Christian worship and marks the beginning of the Word and Sacrament section of the service.

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you. (spoken)

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray….

C: Amen. (spoken)

FIRST LESSON Isaiah 12:1-6

The Lord, the God of free and faithful grace is mentioned five times in this reading. His anger has turned to comfort and salvation. Joyful singing replaces fear. The Holy One of God has become our salvation.

In that day you will say:

“I will praise you, Lord.
Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away
and you have comforted me.
Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation.”
With joy you will draw water
from the wells of salvation.

In that day you will say:

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations what he has done,
and proclaim that his name is exalted.
Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things;
let this be known to all the world.
Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion,
for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.”

PSALM 32 hymnal page 78 & bulletin pg. 7, 8

Congregation sings the Refrain and the verses are read in unison.Z:\CHURCH STUFF\CW Pew Edition\CW TIFF files\Psalms\Ps 032.tif A psalm of repentance from David. True repentance acknowledges sin and humbly confesses. It also rejoices in forgiveness from the Lord.RefrainBlessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven,* whose sins are covered. When I kept silent, your hand was heavy upon me;* my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you* and did not cover up my iniquity.I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”* and you forgave the guilt of my sin.RefrainYou are my hiding place;* you will protect me from trouble. Many are the woes of the wicked,*but the LORD’S unfailing love surrounds those who trust in him.Glory be to the Father and to the Son*and to the Holy Spirit,as it was in the beginning,*is now, and will be forever. Amen.RefrainSECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 1:18-25We preach Christ crucified. Why? It may sound like foolishness to unbelieving hearts, but it has been revealed to us as the power of God for the saving of souls.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.VERSE OF THE DAYM: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)THE GOSPEL Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32Though sin should separate us from God and his family, he welcomes us with the full rights of sons. Yes, foolish sounding to the self-righteous, but great comfort to the repentant. Full and free forgiveness is cause for rejoicing.

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Then Jesus told them this parable:

Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

THE APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.
