GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Don’t Underestimate Jesus and His People!  On Independence Days people celebrate the growth and power of the nation.  Yet there is a more powerful kingdom that has grown up from humble beginnings.  It is the kingdom of God, which often makes unnoticeable progress in conquering hearts for Christ.  Yet stepping back to look at it you can see its tremendous growth. Those who are part of it will be longing for the final outcome when they are “clothed” with immortal life away from the struggles of the world.

A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP All-merciful Father in heaven: In love you sent your Son Jesus to suffer, die on the cross and rise from the grave to save us. In love you send the Holy Spirit through the gospel in Word and Sacrament to call us to repentance, faith, and discipleship. Inspire and empower us to CLING TO THE VINE AND PRODUCE FRUITS OF FAITH. Bless our lip worship today and our life worship tomorrow. Amen.

EPISTLE LESSON 2 Corinthians 5:1-10

Kingdom living – by faith not by sight

Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

Internal and external growth of God’s Kingdom

He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain– first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade.”

With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

NEW TEACHER FURNITURE SHOWER Our new Kindergarten & 1st grade teacher, Rachel Naumann, is moving to Montello this weekend.  After living in dormitories for 10 years, she’s moving into her rented home at 55 Church Street.  I asked if she needed any furniture, and she answered: “Oh yes, actually! I’m needing any couches or chairs for a living room, any coffee tables also for a living room, and maybe a small dresser or nightstand for the small spare bedroom. And any deck furniture, as the house as a smaller deck out back! Anything extra from anyone would be fantastic!”  Please phone, text, or e-mail Rachel with items that you could donate. GIFTS TO MISSIONS  Three gifts have been made to WELS Mission projects:  1) St. John’s School & Little Lambs gave $644.36 to this year LWMS sponsored Kids C.A.R.E. mission project, Feeding Jesus’ Lambs in Nepal.  This will be presented at the LWMS Convention in Green Bay, June 21-24.  2)  St. John’s Sunday School gave $488.49 to their 2017-2018 mission project, India Children’s Homes & School.  3) St. John’s freewill offering for Cameroon from Mission Festival Sunday 5/20 was $364.00.  Emmanuel’s freewill offering was $125 plus a special $1000 gift from one member.  Total gift for Cameroon:  $1,489.00.  Thank you, God, for these blessings to missions!!

Dear Members and Families of St. Johns,

As the school year has ended and another year of ministry and activity at St. John’s has come to an end, it’s time to take a little break for the summer and get ready for the fall. It is also the time when the church financial/budget year will be closing as well. The church and school leadership wanted to say thank you for supporting the ministry here at St. Johns Church, School and various other WELS ministry fields. Thank you for bringing your family and friends to church.

With the beginning of summer for the students, staff and the multitudes of various activities and sports, comes vacations and family activities, and unfortunately what most churches refer to as the summer slump. The summer slump is where we get too busy doing all the other activities that require our time that regular church attendance takes a back seat. Its where we find ourselves on Sunday morning saying, “I am just going to miss this Sunday to do other (insert your own activity here)” and next thing we know it’s been three months since we set foot in church or into Gods Word. We just want to inform you of various other ways you can stay connected to God and his Word. There are many ways to do this whether you attend Church on Sunday or our Wednesday night service. You also can use technology to your advantage and watch a sermon on line or keep up with your daily devotion through the church website or Time of Grace daily devotions. If you are going on vacation you can use the WELS website to look and see if there is a WELS church near where you are vacationing. You are never far away from Gods word if you don’t want to be. Just ask – there are many options that we can suggest for you.

Enjoy your summer time with family and friends. Bring them to church with you. Stay in God’s Word. Make it a part of your summer routine. There is much to be thankful for this last year! Let’s give ourselves one more blessing and avoid the summer slump. It’s that simple and easy. And God promises to bless our efforts in his name.

A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O Heavenly Father, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our prayers. Be gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength to keep your commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

SPEAK LORD! Today’s hymns and readings focus our thoughts on Jesus, who saved us from death in hell for life in heaven by conquering Satan and sin by his own death on the cross and resurrection from the grave. Yes, rejoice that Jesus is our Savior!

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Your Dread Enemy, the Devil, Won’t Win – Adam and Eve ruined everything for everyone. They destined themselves for death. They took the perfect world that God created for everyone and put it under constant attack from all the demons. But God made a promise almost immediately. God said he would send a descendant of Eve to crush Satan’s power. Jesus, that descendant, demonstrated his authority over Satan even before he rose from the dead.

God’s Plan to Save Mankind

FIRST LESSON Genesis 3:8-15

The first promise of the Savior

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

EPISTLE LESSON 2 Corinthians 4:13-18 (today’s sermon text)

The wonderful effect of God’s plan

It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” {Psalm 116:10} With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

The fulfillment of God’s plan

Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”

So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house. I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”

He said this because they were saying, “He has an evil spirit.”

Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”

“Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.

Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

NEW TEACHER FURNITURE SHOWER Our new Kindergarten & 1st grade teacher, Rachel Naumann, is moving to Montello next weekend.  After living in dormitories for 10 years, she’s moving into her rented home at 55 Church Street.  I asked if she needed any furniture, and she answered: “Oh yes, actually! I’m needing any couches or chairs for a living room, any coffee tables also for a living room, and maybe a small dresser or nightstand for the small spare bedroom. And any deck furniture, as the house as a smaller deck out back! Anything extra from anyone would be fantastic!”  Please phone, text, or e-mail Rachel with items that you could donate. GIFTS TO MISSIONS  Three gifts have been made to WELS Mission projects:  1) St. John’s School & Little Lambs gave $644.36 to this year LWMS sponsored Kids C.A.R.E. mission project, Feeding Jesus’ Lambs in Nepal.  This will be presented at the LWMS Convention in Green Bay, June 21-24.  2)  St. John’s Sunday School gave $488.49 to their 2017-2018 mission project, India Children’s Homes & School.  3) St. John’s freewill offering for Cameroon from Mission Festival Sunday 5/20 was $364.00.  Emmanuel’s freewill offering was $125 plus a special $1000 gift from one member.  Total gift for Cameroon:  $1,489.00.  Thank you, God, for these blessings to missions!!

THE SEASON OF PENTECOST During the festival half of the church year (Advent–Pentecost), we focus on the birth and life, suffering and death, resurrection and ascension of our Savior, Jesus Christ. During the 25 Sundays of the Pentecost season, we turn our attention away from Jesus works to his words, listening and learning as he teaches of God’s love and a Christian’s life.

Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath

One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grain fields, his disciples began breaking off heads of wheat. But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “They shouldn’t be doing that! It’s against the law to work by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.”

But Jesus replied, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what King David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest), ate the special bread reserved for the priests alone, and then gave some to his companions. That was breaking the law, too.” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made to benefit people, and not people to benefit the Sabbath. And I, the Son of Man, am master even of the Sabbath!”

THANK YOU for all the prayers and support during my chemo treatments over the last six months. My doctor has informed me that I am officially in remission, but I will need numerous checkups through the years. I am both humbled and blessed with the support I have received. A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord O Triune God–Father, Son and Holy Spirit: Today, Trinity Sunday, we give you praise as the only true God who made us and cares for us. OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Isaiah 6:1-8

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty”

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

The Spirit makes us God’s children and co-heirs with Christ

Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs– heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

The Father gave us his Son and gives us the Spirit that we might have life

After Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, `You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven– the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

Dear Heavenly Father,

On this day of remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Please hold our servicemen and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection.

We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray your peace, provision, hope and strength will fill their lives.

May the members of our armed forces be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord’s mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support.

Confession of Sin

¹Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. ² So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” ³ Elijah was afraid^[a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, ⁴ while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” ⁵ Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” ⁶ He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. ⁷ The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” ⁸ So he got up and ate and drank. FIRST LESSON Acts 1: 15-26

Preparation by the disciples for witnessing to the world

In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus—he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”

(With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the book of Psalms,

”‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’and,” ‘May another take his place of leadership.’

Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

SECOND LESSON 1 John 4:13-21

We love because he first loved us

We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

MISSION FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY, MAY 20, OFFERS FOOD FOR BODY & SOUL.  Mark your calendars for a full day celebrating missions!  Cameroon, Africa, will be highlighted at mission festival services at 8 a.m. at Emmanuel and at 10 a.m. at St. John’s with Missionary Daniel Kroll.  A freewill offering will be taken at both services to support the work in Cameroon. 

   The day offers you a “4-Ps Mission Meal” of Preaching- Pasta-Pie- Presentation.  Pastor Kroll will share food for the soul as he preaches God’s Word at both worship services.  Then, ALL are invited for food for the body at a meal of pasta (lasagna) and homemade pie (Freewill Offering), at St. John’s, beginning around 11:30 a.m. and hosted as a Thrivent Action Team event by women of the LWMS.  Finally, more food for the soul as Missionary Kroll and his wife Karen do a tag-team presentation about Cameroon at St. John’s.

   The Lutheran Church of Cameroon (LCC) is on a journey to build up the church and the faith of her members in a land filled with ancestor worship, witchcraft, and false teachers.  Ten seminarians are finishing the second of their five-year seminary. This is big news as there have been no new pastors since 1999—when these men graduate, their pastorate will have more than doubled!  Your prayer and monetary support is vital.  Cameroon currently operates on project funds rather than being part of the WELS budget.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Produce Fruit! Through faith, we are connected to Christ as a branch is connected to a grape vine. The result of being connected to Jesus is that we will now bear fruit. The fruit of a Christian is a life of love. Out of thanks for God’s love, we now seek to love our fellow man by sharing God’s message of love with him. As believers we seek to show love not only in what we say, but also in what we do.

A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP All-merciful Father in heaven: In love you sent your Son Jesus to suffer, die on the cross and rise from the grave to save us. In love you send the Holy Spirit through the gospel in Word and Sacrament to call us to repentance, faith, and discipleship. Inspire and empower us to CLING TO THE VINE AND PRODUCE FRUITS OF FAITH. The Fifth Sunday of Easter: Fruits of Faith Flow from our Connection to the Risen Lord

FIRST LESSON Acts 8:26-40 (today’s sermon text)

You are branches grafted to the Vine through the gospel in Word and Sacrament

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”

Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.

“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

EPISTLE LESSON 1 John 3:18-24

You are branches, inspired and empowered to produce fruits of faith–Christian love

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS PRESENTATION On Tuesday, May 1st from 6-8pm, Winnebago Lutheran Academy, Luther Prep, Northland High school and Montello Jr/Sr high will be here to give you a presentation on their schools and what each of their respective schools have to offer for your child’s high school education if you choose to go there. This is offered for the upper grades classroom (4^th – 8^th) and all p arents are encouraged to attend as they make plans for their child’s future high school education. There will be a Pizza dinner from 5-6pm and presentations will start at 6pm.

PLEDGE DRIVE UPDATE FOR THE WELS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH RALLY:  We are nearing our goal & have extended the deadline to turn in pledges. Thanks to those who have donated so far, we were able to cover the registration fee for 3 teens to attend the rally who would not have been able to go otherwise. We have a month before the fees are due in for the transportation & excursions costs. The teens have a wonderful opportunity to visit the Creation Museum, The Ark Encounter, & Cedar Point Amusement Park in addition to the rally. With the additional monies donated, we have elected to join in on these excursions. We currently have about 80% of the money needed to cover the additional excursions costs. Any additional pledges towards this would be greatly appreciated. Payment is not needed immediately, but if you could fill out a pledge form located in the back of church, so we have an idea of how much more money we need to raise to reach our goal. CONGRATULATIONS, SEND ONE SISTER RECIPIENTS!  The Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society’s Send One Sister program aims to help mission-minded women attend their first LWMS Convention.  At the April 21 Beaver Dam Circuit Rally in Fox Lake, a fun silent auction provided proceeds that were divided between two Send One Sister applicants. The BD Circuit of LWMS is pleased to help Becky Zimmerman, Juneau, and Sandra Sletten, Pardeeville, attend their first LWMS Convention this June 21-24 in Green Bay!   There is no better place than an LWMS Convention to hear and learn how our WELS missionaries and their families are working to spread God’s Word around the world!  Once they’ve attended, it’s certai n Sandra and Becky will want to go again and again!   TO ALL WOMEN IN  BEAVER DAM CIRCUIT CHURCHES:  Start praying and dreaming about next year!  Your sisters in Christ want to help you attend an LWMS Convention, too!  Watch for 2019 Send One Sister information in your church bulletin or contact your Reporter for information.

MISSION FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY, MAY 20, OFFERS FOOD FOR BODY & SOUL.  Mark your calendars for a full day celebrating missions!  Cameroon, Africa, will be highlighted at mission festival services at 8 a.m. at Emmanuel and at 10 a.m. at St. John’s with Missionary Daniel Kroll.  A freewill offering will be taken at both services to support the work in Cameroon. 

   The day offers you a “4-Ps Mission Meal” of Preaching- Pasta-Pie- Presentation.  Pastor Kroll will share food for the soul as he preaches God’s Word at both worship services.  Then, ALL are invited for food for the body at a meal of pasta (lasagna) and homemade pie (Freewill Offering), at St. John’s, beginning around 11:30 a.m. and hosted as a Thrivent Action Team event by women of the LWMS.  Finally, more food for the soul as Missionary Kroll and his wife Karen do a tag-team presentation about Cameroon at St. John’s.

   The Lutheran Church of Cameroon (LCC) is on a journey to build up the church and the faith of her members in a land filled with ancestor worship, witchcraft, and false teachers.  Ten seminarians are finishing the second of their five-year seminary. This is big news as there have been no new pastors since 1999—when these men graduate, their pastorate will have more than doubled!  The number of missionaries has doubled with a second couple joining the Krolls in Cameroon in 2017.  Your prayer and monetary support is vital.  Cameroon currently operates on project funds rather than being part of the WELS budget.

A PRAYER FOR THOSE GATHERED AT WORSHIP –We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Jesus Humbly Rides Into Jerusalem To Die – So different from earthly rulers is our Lord Jesus.  Jesus was coming to finish the most important battle of time and eternity, yet he did not enter Jerusalem as a mighty warrior in the world’s eyes.  Instead of coming with a huge army on mighty horses, Jesus came on a lowly donkey, with twelve men that weren’t anything special in the eyes of most.  It was this humble King that the crowd greets with words that rang to the heavens then, and continue to be lifted to Jesus today, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Palm Sunday: Jesus’ Entry Into Jerusalem

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Zechariah 9:9, 10 (today’s sermon text)

Zechariah gives new hope and encouragement to the people of Judah, who were discouraged after their captivity. He tells them of their coming Savior-King, who would appear in lowliness and humility to set up his kingdom of peace to the very “ends of the earth.”

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the war-horses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 2:5-11

The Apostle Paul tells of the humiliation of Christ and his final glory. Christ Jesus lowered himself and became a servant as he performed his redemptive work. God exalted him to the highest place and made him our glorious King.

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death– even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

GOSPEL Mark 11:1-10

Jesus enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey. He enters the city as a king, yet his glory is in his humility and suffering.

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, `Why are you doing this?’ tell him, `The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.'”

They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” {Psalm 118:25,26} “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

VETERAN 2018 SPIRITUAL R & R BY LUTHERAN MILITARY SUPPORT GROUP (LMSG) The wounds of war run deep; especially the ones unseen, in the heart and mind. Christian warriors come together to hear God’s grace and mercy that binds what is broken, heals what hurts, and destroys the spiritual enemy. This retreat, May 4-6, is intended for and open to WELS/ELS veterans since 1991, men and women who have any degree of post-traumatic stress related to their military service. A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Dear Heavenly Father: I come to your house today to worship you, to give you the praise you deserve and the prayers and hymns you desire. Through your Word and Sacrament, come to me. Take me by the hand and lead me to the cross where your Son offered sin’s sacrifice once and for all. Forgive my sins, strengthen my faith, assure me of my salvation, and enlist me for Christian service. Teach me today, especially, about Jesus, my Great High Priest. Amen.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Jesus is Our High Priest Who Offers Himself – Before Jesus was born, believers had to regularly offer up sacrifices for sin.  Only the High Priest could go before God with the blood and prayers of the people.  These sacrifices would go on and on for the entire life of the Old Testament believer as a vivid reminder that God would send a Savior who would be sacrificed on the behalf of all people.  Today the Word of God shows that Jesus, our High Priest, would sacrifice himself and bring a new covenant of life that would last forever.

The promise of the new covenant

“The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. Jesus is our great High Priest

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

VERSE OF THE DAY “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

GOSPEL John 12:20-33

Jesus’ road to glory was the road to the cross

Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

“Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP St. John’s will be holding its kindergarten round up Thursday, March 22^nd! If you have a child who will be entering kindergarten next year, consider coming out to see what kindergarten is all about! It will be in Miss Borck’s classroom from 4:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. Come and go as you please!

HELP WANTED! St. John’s is in need of some volunteers to help clean the church. Let’s do our part and take care of God’s house that he has blessed us with! If you are interested, please contact the office.

WEDNESDAY LENTEN DEVOTIONS “Jesus, Our Great High Priest” (based on the New Testament book of Hebrews) is the theme for this year’s midweek Lenten devotions that began Ash Wednesday, 2/14 3:30 p.m. at Emmanuel and 6:30 p.m. at St. John’s. Supper will be served in the St. John’s lower level from 4:15–6:00 p.m. “Jesus, I will ponder now, on your holy passion.” (Hymn 98)

CONTEST! Box Tops, Kwik Trip, and Tyson a+ contest has started and ends on APRIL 13th!  Each classroom will compete to see which room can collect the most items and the winning class room will win a “Taco Boat” party. Box Tops do have expiration dates, so if everyone could please turn in what you currently have AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, it would be much appreciated!  Thank you to everyone for supporting your school and have fun collecting!  Remember that family and friends are happy to help!  Good luck!

This year’s Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society Convention will be held June 21-24 in Green Bay, and it’s time to register! If you have never attended but have thought you might like to attend this mission-packed weekend, you are encouraged to complete a Send One Sister application, also available from your church’s reporter. The Beaver Dam Circuit Board will be holding a Silent Auction at it spring rally to raise SOS funds which will be given to first-time attendees from our circuit to help with their expenses. GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY A Gracious Disposition – It has been noted that a drowning man will not complain about the size of the boat that comes to rescue him.  Yet today’s first lesson alerts us to illegitimate complaining as God rescued his people from slavery.  In each lesson God shows his merciful disposition of grace–undeserved love that rescues sinners.

The Fourth Sunday in Lent: Faith Looks to Jesus

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Numbers 21:4-9

The bronze snake–a picture of Jesus

They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea, to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the desert? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

Then the LORD sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

The LORD said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

EPISTLE Ephesians 2:4-10

By grace you have been saved through faith

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Believe in the one who was lifted up

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

EASTER BREAKFAST AT EMMANUEL  April 1 following the 8:00 AM Easter Service.  Everyone is invited (members, friends and guests) for pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, cheese, and fruit.  A freewill offering will be taken for Emmanuel’s Education Fund.  The breakfast is supported by a Thrivent Action Team Project.  Join us for food and fellowship in the Parish Hall.

Part of this spring’s Easter for Kids will be a baby animal petting zoo. The event is Saturday, March 24. Would you have any of the following baby animals on that day that you would allow us to borrow? OR do you have leads and contact numbers of someone who might? Kittens, puppies, bunnies, chicks, ducklings, lamb, kids (goats), piglets—we are also open to suggestions. We already have some of the babies lined up, but we would like backup! EASTER FOR KIDS DONATIONS APPRECIATED Planning for 75 children on Saturday, March 24.  Monetary gifts help the most—used for advertising, mailings, crafts, baskets, anything & everything for the event. We appreciate donations of home-crafted items for the baskets.  Volunteers are still needed to bake for the baskets & make jello jigglers for the lunch. CONTEST! Box Tops, Kwik Trip, and Tyson a+ contest has started and ends on APRIL 13th!  Each classroom will compete to see which room can collect the most items and the winning class room will win a “Taco Boat” party. Box Tops do have expiration dates, so if everyone could please turn in what you currently have AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, it would be much appreciated!  Thank you to everyone for supporting your school and have fun collecting!  Remember that family and friends are happy to help!  Good luck!

SEND ONE SISTER PROGRAM assists women who would like to attend the LWMS Convention as a first-time attendee. This year’s Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society Convention will be held June 21-24 in Green Bay, and it’s time to register! Registration materials are available from your reporter (Helen Stelter at Emmanuel; Linda Wachholz at St. John’s). If you have never attended but have thought you might like to attend this mission-packed weekend, you are encouraged to complete a Send One Sister application, also available from your church’s reporter. The Beaver Dam Circuit Board will be holding a Silent Auction at it spring rally to raise SOS funds which will be given to first-time attendees from our circuit to help with their expenses. THE LUTHERAN GIRL PIONEERS The Lutheran Girl Pioneers invites girls ages 8-15 to join us at the LGP International Camp July 29- August 4, 2018. We have many classes to choose, from canoeing to Zumba, from crocheting to archery.  There are also nightly campfires, daily devotions, and so much more!

LGP Camp is located at Camp Bird, Crivitz, Wisconsin.

You don’t have to be a member of Lutheran Girl Pioneers to come! Girls from all over the U.S. and Canada have joined us! Registrations come out in March.
