OLD TESTAMENT Psalm 90

A Prayer of Moses, the man of God

Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You turn men back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, O sons of men.” For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. You sweep men away in the sleep of death; they are like the new grass of the morning- though in the morning it springs up new, by evening it is dry and withered.

We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. The length of our days is seventy years- or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.

Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Relent, O Lord! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children.

May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us- yes, establish the work of our hands.

PSALM 145 (hymnal page 119, sung in unison)

EPISTLE 1 Peter 1:22-25

Born Anew For the New Year

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For,

“All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.

VERSE OF THE DAY (hymnal page 30, all sing)

“Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written…”

(Please stand)

GOSPEL: Luke 13:1-9 (today’s sermon text by Pastor Dave Starr)

Do Not Worry

Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

“Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

After the Gospel, all sing:

“Praise be to you, O Christ!”

THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

DECEMBER 30, 2018

WELCOME GUEST PASTOR John Dolan

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH! We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. Restrooms and nursery area are located the parish hall at Emmanuel and in the lower level and “link-way” at St. John’s. It’s nice to have you visit today. May God bless our worship together!

THE SEASON OF CHRISTMAS On the Sundays after Christmas we stop to PONDER and PROCLAIM. With Mary at the manger we ponder the meaning of the birth of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, the Savior. With the shepherds in from the fields we witness the miracle in Bethlehem, then spread the good news of great joy for all people–Jesus Christ the Savior is born!

A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O Lord–my Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter–I have come before you to hear your holy Word. Open my heart by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word I may repent of my sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear me for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

ORDER OF SERVICE–LITURGY

Morning Praise (hymnal page 45)

PASTOR’S GREETING

(Please stand)

OPENING HYMN 343”Christ Is the World’s Light” (sung in place of “Morning Hymn”, printed in hymnal, all sing)

LITURGY (hymnal page 45b, read & sung responsively)

(Please be seated for the day’s Bible readings)

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Christmas Is the Celebration of God’s Grace – God’s grace, or undeserved love, is mighty and accomplishes his will. Despite the opposition of wicked people or human barriers, God’s grace accomplishes his desire:  the eternal salvation of immortal souls. Even after all the gifts have been opened and used, we stand in awe of God’s gift to us, his grace in Christ, Bethlehem’s baby.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON 1 Samuel 2:18-20, 26

Samuel, a type of Christ

But Samuel was ministering before the LORD– a boy wearing a linen ephod. Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the LORD.” Then they would go home.

And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men.

PSALM 111 (hymnal page 106, sung in unison)

EPISTLE LESSON Hebrews 2:10-18

Christ comes to be our brother

In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises.” {Psalm 22:22} And again, “I will put my trust in him.” {Isaiah 8:17} And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.” {Isaiah 8:18}

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death–that is, the devil–and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

(Please stand)

GOSPEL Luke 2:41-52 (today’s sermon text)

The boy Jesus in the temple

Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

“Oh, Come, Little Children”

  1. Oh, come, little children, oh, come, one and all, To Bethlehem haste, to the manger so small. God’s Son for a gift has been sent you this night To be your Redeemer, your joy and Delight.
  2. He’s born in a stable for you and for me, Draw near by the bright gleaming starlight to see, In swaddling clothes lying, so meek and so mild, And purer than angels, the heavenly Child.
  3. See Mary and Joseph with love-beaming eyes Are gazing upon the rude bed where He lies. The shepherds are kneeling, with hearts full of love, While angels sing loud hallelujahs above.
  4. Kneel down and adore Him with shepherds today, Lift up little hands now and praise Him as they, Rejoice that a Savior from sin you can boast, And join in the song of the heavenly host.

Please stand.

THE SAVIOR IS PROMISED . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mr. Wachholz

Ch: “A star will come out of Jacob;

C: “A scepter will rise out of Israel.”

Ch: “The Lord himself will give you a sign;

C: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

THE CHRISTMAS STORY, Part 1, Luke 2:1-7

SONG “In Those Days Caesar Augustus” . . . . . . . . . . Children

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

THE CHRISTMAS STORY, Luke 2:8-14 . . . . . . . . Children &

Congregation

Children: And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

Congregation: An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

Ch: But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

C: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

Ch: This will be a sign to you:

C: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

Ch: Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

C: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.

THE OFFERING, WORSHIPER GREETINGS,

FRIENDSHIP REGISTERS

HYMN “Once in Royal David’s City”. . . . . . . . . . . Congregation

  1. Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.
  2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Savior holy.
  3. But our eyes at last shall see him Through his own redeeming love, For that child, so dear and gentle, Is our Lord in heav’n above, And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone.
  4. Not in that poor, lowly stable With the oxen standing by Shall we see him, but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high. Then like stars his children crowned, All in white, his praise will sound.

ANGEL: Run, shepherds, run,

Find the little baby,

He’s your Savior and Lord!

Run, shepherds, run!

SONG “Run, Shepherds, Run!” . . . Mr. Wachholz & Children

Over the hills of Judea,

Stars were shining down so bright;

Angelic voices were singing,

Telling the world “A King is born tonight!”

So . . .Run, shepherds, run to the village,

Run, shepherds, run one and all;

Run till you come to the stable,

He lies within a cattle stall!

Run, shepherds, run till you find Him,

Run till you see the glorious sight!

Kneel and adore Him on bended knee;

Tell ev’rybody you happen to see,

Jesus is born tonight! (repeat)

Jesus is born tonight!

SHEPHERD #1/Brody Henke: We have come to worship this infant, Christ, the Savior of the world! There were angels everywhere! We could barely believe our eyes. They pointed us to this humble stable.

SHEPHERD #2/Nolan Van Treeck: The sky was full of angels! Our ears are still ringing with the song they sang! What a glorious sound!

SHEPHERD #3/Easton Wegner: We kneel at his manger bed. Here lies our Savior, God’s anointed Son, but . . . we do not understand. Why is he here in a barn, in a manger?

MARY/Katie Marlowe: There was no room. There was no place in the whole town, but do not be troubled. These gentle beasts around us have sung a lullaby sweeter than any human voice could offer. Joseph keeps his watch, and I rock Jesus gently in my arms. But come, shepherds, see God’s Son. Tonight He is born for you and everyone!

NARRATION . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mrs. Brown

Within our hearts,

O Lord for You

  2. “This is the Christ, our God and Lord, Who in all need shall aid afford: He will Himself your Savior be From all your sins to set you free.
  3. Ah, dearest Jesus, holy Child, Make Thee a bed, soft, undefiled, Within my heart, that it may be A quiet chamber kept for Thee.

PART 4: THE WISE MEN

NARRATION . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mrs. Stelter

SPEECH CHOIR Recitation #4: Wise men saw

A wondrous star;

It led them to

The tiny Child.

WISE MAN #1/Wally Wolsdorf: We saw a star in the East.

WISE MAN #2/Haiden Van Treeck: It was like no other we had ever seen, so we knew it was special. We loaded our camels, and the star led us to your little village of Bethlehem.

WISEMAN #3/Bruchs Wegner: We followed the star!

WISEMAN #2: Thinking a king would be born in a palace in the great city of Jerusalem, we went there, but soon we learned from the chief priests and teachers of the law that the scriptures said “Go to Bethlehem!”

SPEECH CHOIR Recitation #4

SONG “March of the Kings” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Children

Three great kings I met at early morn, With all their retinue were slowly marching. Three great kings I met at early morn were on their way to meet the newly born, With gifts of gold brought from far away, And valiant warriors to guard the kingly treasure, With gifts of gold brought from far away, and shields all shining in their bright array.

MARY/Katie Marlowe: Welcome! Your search ends here. Meet Jesus, the Son of God, the promised Savior, and your King! Guided by God Himself, the star has led you here.

SPEECH CHOIR Recitation #4

WISEMAN #2: We bring great gifts! Dearest Jesus, we lay our crowns before you in solemn worship. We offer our treasures—not only gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but also our greater gifts of love—our faith, our hope, and our joy. In adoration, we lay these gifts at your feet.

SPEECH CHOIR Recitation #3: The inns are full.

But there is room

Within our hearts

O Lord for You!

HYMN “As With Gladness Men of Old” Congregation

  1. As with gladness men of old Did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light, Leading onward, beaming bright, So most gracious Lord, may we Evermore be led by Thee!
  2. As with joyful steps they sped, Savior, to Thy lowly bed, there to bend the knee before Thee whom heav’n and earth adore, So may we with willing feet Ever seek Thy mercy seat.
  3. As they offered gifts more rare At Thy cradle, rude and bare, So may we with holy joy, Pure and free from sin’s alloy, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to Thee, our heav’nly King!

PART 5: IS THERE ROOM TODAY?

NARRATIONS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Mr. Wachholz

Mrs. Brown

CHILDREN: But what about YOU? Have we or any of you really given him the place He deserves in our hearts?

NATIVITY CHARACTERS: Your hearts should overflow with joy! All our sins and your sins are paid for by what Jesus did on the cross. The Baby in the manger is OUR SAVIOR AND YOURS!

SONG: “There’s A Village in Judea” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Children

  1. There’s a village in Judea, overcrowded and forlorn; but the village in Judea is the place where Christ was born.
  2. There’s a stable in the village, where the sheep and goats are shorn; and the stable in the village is the place where Christ was born.
  3. There’s a manger in the stable, looking very old and worn; but the manger in the stable is the place where Christ was born.
  4. There’s a baby in the manger; gather round to keep him warm; for the baby is God in human form.
  5. There’s a baby in the manger; see him sleeping peacefully; for the baby in the manger is the one who died for me.

Please stand.

THE CHRISTMAS CREED . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Congregation

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth, who sent

His Son as my Savior on Christmas Day;

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

announced by the angels,

worshipped by the shepherds,

adored by the Wise Men,

who lived to suffer, die, and rise again,

to free us from sin, death, and the power of the devil;

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

who has brought me to faith in the Christ of Christmas

and by whose continuous work in my heart

I am ever led to lay before the feet of Christ

the treasures of my love

and live under Him as my King,

both now and forevermore. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (sung) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Congregation

Melody: Away in a Manger

Our Father in heaven, all praise to your name! Your kingdom among us, your will done the same By mortals and angels. Come, Lord reign alone: Oh, hear us and bless us from heaven’s high throne.

The bread that we yearn for provide us each day; As we forgive others, our sins take away; In times of temptation, to lead us be near; From evil deliver your children most dear.

For yours is the kingdom; o’er all things you reign. And yours is the power; all things you maintain. To you be the glory, resounding again From all of creation, forever. Amen.

A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Heavenly Father, the voice of one crying in the wilderness prepared the hearts of your people as your Chosen One entered our world to be our Savior. Let that same Advent voice cry out to my heart so that with true repentance I prepare to celebrate the coming of my newborn King. Replace my spiritual pride with Christlike humility, my apathy with commitment and dedication. With your power, hope and love, come and lead me as I dedicate my life to you. Keep my attention also on the skies as I watch and pray for the triumphant return of Christ my King. Bless my worship. Amen.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY The Second Sunday in Advent:  Preparing for Purity is Often Painful – Many people look for easy fixes for their problems. God, though, often puts his people through a long, painful process to prepare us to embrace the Savior he has sent. God always works through his Word to develop in us a life that shows the fruit of the purity he has put around us in Christ.

TODAY’S THEME

Rejoice! The Lord is Near!

FIRST LESSON Malachi 3:1-4

The prophet Malachi foretells the coming of “the messenger of the covenant”

“See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.

But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.

PSALM 24 (hymnal page 73, cantor sings first line, congregation sings second line, all sing refrains and Gloria)

EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 1: 3-11

Our God who brought us to faith will keep us in the faith until Christ returns

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart; for whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia! “Prepare the way for the Lord, Make straight paths for him. All mankind will see God’s salvation.” Alleluia! (Luke 3:4,6)

GOSPEL Luke 3:1-6 (today’s sermon text)

John the Baptist urges us to prepare the way for the coming Lord

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all mankind will see God’s salvation.’”

PERSONAL PRAYERS

For Worship

In the Name of Jesus

FOR PEACE

O God of peace, I turn aside from an unquiet world, seeking rest for my spirit and light for my thoughts. I bring my work to be sanctified, my wounds to be healed, my sins to be forgiven, my hopes to be renewed. In you there is perfect harmony. Draw me to yourself, and silence the discords of my wasteful life. Your greatness is beyond my highest praise. Take me out of the loneliness of self, and fill me with the fullness of your peace.

REMEMBRANCE OF BAPTISM

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: in the water of baptism you forgave my sin and delivered me from death and the devil. You raised me to a new life in Christ and clothed me with his merit. Help me rejoice in your washing of salvation and live before you in righteousness and purity forever.

A PERSONAL CONFESSION OF SIN

Father, I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your child. Especially am I sorry for ______. Yet in mercy you sacrificed your only Son to purge away my guilt. For his sake, O God, be merciful to me, a sinner, and in the joy of your Holy Spirit let me serve you all my days.

PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING

Praise to you, O God, maker of all things. You gave me life and breath. You sent your Son to cleanse me from sin and your Spirit to make me glad. Thank you for providing me with all that I need to live. Especially do I thank you for ______. To you be honor and glory now and forever.

BEFORE WORSHIP

Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention I may hear your voice and sing your praise.

O Lord—our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter—we are assembled in your presence to hear your holy Word. We pray that you would open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Jesus’ sake.

BEFORE COMMUNION

Lord, I am not worthy to be a guest at your holy table. But you are the friend of sinners, and you will not cast me out. This bread is your body, which bore my sins upon the tree. This wine is your blood, which purifies me from all guilt. At your invitation, I come rejoicing. Receive me, my Savior.

AFTER COMMUNION

Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for nourishing me in this sacrament with your body and blood. You have given me forgiveness, life, and salvation. Let me always remain in you as a branch remains in the vine. Send me out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

O living Bread from heaven, how richly you have fed your guest! The gifts you now have given have filled my heart with joy and rest. Lord, grant me that thus strengthened with heavenly food, while here my course on earth is lengthened, I serve with holy fear. And when you call my spirit to leave this world below, I enter through your merit where joys unmingled flow.

AFTER WORSHIP

Good Shepherd, I was glad to be here, gathered with your flock to worship you. Cause the Word I have heard to take root in my heart and bear fruit in my life. Guide me in paths of righteousness, that my words and actions might lead others to glorify you.

Grant, O Lord, that the lips which here have sung your praise may continue to glorify you in the world; that the ears which have heard you speak may be open always to your Word and closed to hatred and discord; that the tongues which have confessed your name may always speak the truth without fear; that all of us who have worshiped together today may be united in true love for each other as you have loved us in Jesus.

BY THOSE SERVING AT WORSHIP

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: I am happy for the privilege of ministering in your house. Help me to be reverent and humble in my service, setting a good example by my words and actions. Enable me to fulfill my duties in such a way that I may assist others to worship you joyfully.

A Thanksgiving Service

November 21 6:30 p.m. St. John’s

November 22 9 a.m. Emmanuel

Pastor Peter Zietlow

Pastor’s Greeting

The First Day Reading: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was a formless void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light” and there was light; and God separated the light from the darkness. Evening passed and morning came—the first day.

A Hymn of Invocation is sung by the congregation to the tune of Hymn 193, “Come, Now, Almighty King.” 4 verses.

God, whose almighty word chaos and darkness heard
And took their flight; hear us, we humbly pray, and where the Gospel day
Sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light!

Lord, who once came to bring, on your redeeming wing,
Healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind;
Oh, now to humankind let there be light!

Spirit of truth and love, life-giving holy dove,
Speed forth your flight; move on the water’s face bearing the lamp of grace,
And in earth’s darkest place let there be light!

Holy and blessed three, glorious Trinity,
Wisdom, love, might! Boundless as ocean’s tide, rolling in fullest pride.
Through the earth, far and wide, let there be light!

The Litany is spoken responsively by the pastor and the congregation:

P Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

C Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

P Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

C His steadfast love endures forever!

The Prayer of the Day

P Praise and thanksgiving be to you, O faithful Creator. According to your word and promise, you take delight in prospering us. With your good gifts of sun and rain the earth brings forth its bounty; with your good gifts of health and strength, we too perform the work which you have given us to do. Make us truly grateful for each evidence of your delight, and give us grace to show our gratitude; through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord. Amen.

The Second Day Reading: And God said, “Let there be an expanse to divide the water and separate water from water.” And it was so. God make an expanse, and it separated the water under it from the water above it. He named the expanse “Sky.” Evening passed and morning came—the second day.

The Old Testament Reading, portions from Isaiah 55:  “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! … Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. …Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.”

“Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.”

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

The Third Day Reading: And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. And God said, “Let the land produce vegetation, plants yielding seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so. And God saw that it was good. Evening passed and morning came—the third day.

Congregation Hymn sung in place of Psalm. Hymn 609, “We Praise You, O God, Our Redeemer.” 3 verses

We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator!
 In grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before you; we kneel and adore you;
We bless your holy name; glad praises we sing.

We worship you, God of our fathers; we bless you;
Through trial and tempest our guide you have been. When perils o’ertake us, you will not forsake us,
And with your help, O Lord, our battles we win.

With voices united our praises we offer; To you, great Jehovah, glad anthems we raise. Your strong arm will guide us; our God is besides us. To you, our great Redeemer, fore’er be praise!

The Fourth Day Reading: And God said, “Let there be lights in the sky to give light upon the earth, to serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years.” And it was so. And God saw that it was good. Evening passed and morning came—the fourth day.

The New Testament Reading, from portions of 1 Corinthians 15:

But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” … How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. … There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.  So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable. … Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. … But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

The Fifth Day Reading: And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the heavens.” And God saw that it was good. Evening passed and morning came—the fifth day.

Congregation Hymn, Hymn 234, ”Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.” Verses 1-2

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear now to his temple draw near,
 Joining in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things is wondrously reigning
And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen all that is needful has been
 Sent by his gracious ordaining?

Rise for the Gospel Reading, Matthew 6:25-34.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.

Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Congregation Hymn, Hymn 234, ”Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.” Verses 4-5

Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
As with his love he befriends you.

Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again.
 Gladly forever adore him!

The Sixth Day Reading: And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds.” And it was so. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over all the earth.” So God created human beings in his own image. He made them male and female and blessed them. And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. Evening passed and morning came—the sixth day.

Sermon Theme and Text Matthew 6:25-34

“Thank You Jesus” for your 1. promise, 2. plan, 3. plea.

Congregation Hymn, Hymn 610, 3 verses

Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done, in whom his world rejoices.
Who, from our mothers’ arms, has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us,
And keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed.
And free us from all ills in this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,
The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore;
For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

The Seventh Day Reading: Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and rested from all his work, blessing the day and making it holy.

The Offering. (During the offering, greet one another and sign the friendship register.) There is a solo at St. John’s during the offering. The words are printed below:

We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand; he sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes, and the sunshine, and soft, refreshing rain.

Refrain: All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then, thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.

He only is the maker of all things near and far: he paints the wayside flower, he lights the evening star; the winds and waves obey him, by him the birds are fed; much more to us, his children, he gives our daily bread. [Refrain]

We thank thee then, O Father, for all things bright and good, the seed-time and the harvest, our life, our health, our food. Accept the gifts we offer for all thy love imparts, and, what thou most desirest, our humble, thankful hearts. [Refrain]

Rise for Prayer: To you, O God, do we give thanks: for your great mercy toward us; for our creation, preservation, and redemption; for the pardon of sin; for the numerous gifts of your love; and for the promise of eternal life in Jesus Christ our Savior. These are your great mercies, but as we rejoice in them we would not forget that you have given us even more. In the ripening of the grain, in the coming to maturity of the fruit, in the abundance which the land so freely yields, we see your hand and we give you our thanks. Enlarge our spirit of thankfulness, that we may with full willingness and in your spirit of giving share our abundance with all who are in need, that they too may praise you, through Jesus Christ. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer, a hymn version sung to the tune of Hymn 618, “Before the Lord We Bow.” 3 verses

Our heav’nly Father, hear your faithful children’s prayer:
Your name, divine and dear, be hallowed ev’rywhere!
Your kingdom come! Your heav’nly will
Among us, still, on earth be done!

The bread for which we yearn each day, O Father, give.
Forgive us, as in turn our debtors we forgive.
Your people lead in trial’s hour.
From Satan’s pow’r let us be freed!

For you, O Lord, are King; all pow’r is yours, we own;
Your glory now we sing, the glory yours alone.
So shall it be; your kingdom, might,
And glory bright, eternally!

The Benediction

As you, O God, have blessed our coming in, now bless our going forth; and grant that when we leave your house we may not leave your presence, but be ever near us and keep us near to you.

God bless you and keep you. God’s face shine upon you and be gracious to you. God look upon you with love and give you peace.

And they all said

C Amen

The Closing Hymn, Hymn 334 “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow.”

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, son, and Holy Ghost!

THE THIRD SUNDAY OF END TIMES

THE SAINTS TRIUMPHANT

NOVEMBER 18, 2018

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH! We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. Restrooms and nursery area are located the parish hall at Emmanuel and in the lower level and “link-way” at St. John’s. It’s nice to have you visit today. May God bless our worship together!

END TIMES SUNDAYS Today is the third of the last four Sundays of the church year: Reformation, Last Judgment, Saints Triumphant, and Christ the King. On each of these Sundays we pay close attention to God as he teaches us about the end times of this world and the beginning of eternal life with Jesus in heaven. May Christ bless our worship and prepare our hearts and lives for His return.

Amen.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY

Like children playing hide and seek, Jesus calls out to us through his Word, “Ready or not here I come!” Thanks be to God that through Jesus’ saving work on the cross, we have been made ready! May his Spirit keep us in saving faith in him.

FIRST LESSON Daniel 12:1-3

The saints will shine like to stars

“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people– everyone whose name is found written in the book– will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”

EPISTLE LESSON 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (today’s sermon text)

“Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.”

VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple. Alleluia. (Revelation 7:15)

(Please stand)

GOSPEL John 5:25-29

The Son of God will raise the dead and separate believer from unbeliever

“I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out– those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.”

The family of Rae Lynn would like to thank all of you for your prayers and kindness shown through this difficult time. The Lord has given and the Lord has taken away-blessed be the name of the Lord.

THANK YOU to all who helped organize Grandparents Day last Tuesday at school and the Holiday Trail events (book fair, bake sale, Thai Village sale) this weekend.

THAI VILLAGE The Thai Village craft sale will be open today after 10:00am church in the St. John’s link way. With Christmas just around the corner, there’s no reason to start shopping now. Come check it out!

ST. JOHN’S DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! If you sat with Lifetouch for a photography session and had a Lifetouch photo put into our new directory, come pick up your free directory in the link way. If you submitted your own photo and would like a directory, they can be purchased for $10.00 ea.

PLEASE MUTE YOUR CELL PHONES before the worship service begins. No texting while driving or worshiping.

MEN’S BIBLE CLASS this week Tuesday at 6:30pm. Being tolerant is good, right? Or is it? What does God say?

TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH WELS DVDS are available in the St. John’s link way-$5 donation.

ADVENT begins on Sunday, December 2, this year.  It’s the season that anticipates the coming of the Savior.  We prepare for this coming in many ways.  But one way is by decorating and beautifying our homes and churches.  We use a circle of artificial greens around our Advent candles in the front of the church, with each candle lit in order on Sundays in Advent, and each candle symbolizing an important event on the way to the Savior’s birth—the last candle is the Christ Candle.

But another way is to hang Christmas wreaths on the church doors as a sign of welcome.

Once again—anyone interested in donating toward the purchase of wreaths for the front doors at St. John’s is encouraged to contact LuAnn Zieman at 608-297-2422 or email zieman@bugnet.net or by mail at W1440 State Rd 23, Montello, WI 53949.

GRIEFSHARE No Griefshare this week due to Thanksgiving. We will see you next week.

WELS VOLUNTEERS – https://www.lutheranvolunteerconnect.com/ ie WELS Kingdom Workers, Mission & Relief Teams

CHARITY GIVING In the past WELS members have asked about supporting the Salvation Army with their time (ringing bells/soliciting offerings) and giving offerings.  Below is a clip from the WELS.net Q&A regarding WELS participation with the Salvation Army.  –Pastor Z

Is it acceptable to ring the bells or contribute money for the Salvation Army during Christmas time because of the charity they do, despite the false doctrine in the Salvation Army Church?

Your question links the charitable work of the Salvation Army with the mission of that church, which is driven by their false doctrine. That is important to keep in mind. The work they do is in line with the mission of their church.

As you indicated, there is false doctrine in that church. The Salvation Army is a self-described “holiness movement,” placing greater emphasis on the Christian’s life than on what God has done for people through Jesus Christ his Son. The Salvation Army rejects the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

2 John 10-11 (“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.”) instructs us not to support those whose teachings are contrary to Scripture. That applies to the church in your question. That applies to any church that holds to false doctrine. While we can appreciate the tenacity of the bell ringers of that church at Christmas time, we cannot support their mission.

There is no need to feel like a Scrooge by walking past the bell ringers. We can help meet the material needs of others (Isaiah 58:7; Galatians 6:10) through contributions to charitable agencies that are not tied to churches that hold to and teach false doctrine. We can give to our church body’s Christian Aid and Relief.

In gratitude for God’s blessings and in compassionate concern for the material and spiritual needs of others, Christians have reason for charitable giving at Christmas time and every season of the year. Yes, “Let us all be cheerful givers To the glory of your name” (Christian Worship 577:3).

(Note: Questions submitted to WELS.net Q&A are answered by WELS pastors/professors serving at Martin Luther College and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. Some of the local, non-religious charities which Emmanuel and St. John’s members do support are: 1. Marquette County “Care & Share” Food Bank, 2. Marquette County Giving Tree, 3. Tots to Teens Holiday Book Drive via Literacy Volunteers of Marquette County, 4. Montello Public Library.)

TREE TRIMMING AT ST. JOHN’S ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25  Come and help decorate the Christmas tree immediately following the  service next Sunday.  All are welcome, but we do need a couple of younger men who wouldn’t mind climbing the tall ladders and balancing on the pulpit to decorate the top of the tree. A light lunch will be served when the work is done!

THE SECOND SUNDAY OF END TIMES

LAST JUDGMENT

NOVEMBER 11, 2015

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH! We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. Restrooms and nursery area are located the parish hall at Emmanuel and in the lower level and “link-way” at St. John’s. It’s nice to have you visit today. May God bless our worship together!

PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Heavenly Father, I have come to worship you. Draw near to me in your gracious Word and Sacrament, and assure me of your loving kindness. Curb my wandering thoughts, that with undivided attention, I may hear your voice and sing your praise.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY – Jesus Will Come Back in Glory – At the end of the world, Jesus will come back in glory to judge both the living and the dead. Those who believe in him receive a verdict of “not-guilty.” Those who do not believe stand condemned to the eternal suffering of hell.

ST. JOHN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL SINGS “Child of God”, “My Knee Shall Bow” (in place of opening hymn)

CHILD OF GOD

If anybody asks you who I am,

Who I am,

Who I am,

If anybody asks you who I am,

Say that I’m a child of God.

If anybody asks you how I am,

How I am,

How I am,

If anybody asks you how I am,

Say that I’m alive and free.

If anybody asks you what that means,

What that means,

What that means,

If anybody ask you what that means,

Say that I was born again.

If anybody asks you where I’m going,

Where I’m going,

Where I’m going,

If anybody asks you where I’m going,

Say that I am going to heav’n.

If anybody asks you who’s my friend,

Who’s my friend,

Who’s my friend,

If anybody ask you who’s my friend,

Say that Jesus is his name!

MY KNEE SHALL BOW

My knee shall bow;

My tongue shall sing:

Jesus, you are Lord and King,

And wherever I go

And whatever I do,

Let my praise be unto you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY (pastor reads)

(Please be seated for the day’s scripture readings)

THEME FOR TODAY (11/11 END TIMES 2-VETERANS DAY): Last Judgment

OLD TESTAMENT: Malachi 4:1-3 (today’s sermon text)

Christ will appear with healing in His wings

“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the LORD Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty.”

PSALM 90 (hymnal page 99, cantor sings the first line, congregation sings the second line, all sing refrains and Gloria)

EPISTLE: Hebrews 9:24-28

Christ will appear on the Last Day to bring salvation

For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

VERSE OF THE DAY (pastor reads)

Alleluia. “Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.” Alleluia. (Matthew 24:42)

LITURGY (hymnal page 30, all sing)

“Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!…”

(Please stand)

GOSPEL: Luke 12:35-40

Christ, the Judge, will come unexpectedly. Be ready!

“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

After the reading of the Gospel, all sing:

“Praise be to you, O Christ”

(Please be seated)

SERMON HYMN 208 “Great God, What Do I See and Hear”

SERMON: Malachi 4:1-3

“A Striking Symbol of the Savior: The Sun”

  1. Burning the arrogant
  2. Healing the reverent

(Please stand after the sermon)

NICENE CREED (hymnal page 31, all read)

OFFERING, WORSHIPER GREETINGS & FRIENDSHIP REGISTERS

OFFERING PRAYER

(Please stand)

VETERANS DAY PRAYER

Pastor: Everlasting Protector and Defender, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the guns of World War I went silent. To celebrate this armistice a holiday was made of this date. But, the world soon learned that the War to end all Wars did not. A series of wars followed with increased efficiency in killing. Thus the holiday was changed to honor everyone who has served in our nation’s Armed Forces. We now call it Veterans Day.

Congregation: We thank you, Lord, for our military veterans. Through them you have provided us with blessings that people around the world envy.

P: But the presence of our veterans reminds us of your warning that wars and rumors of wars will continue until the end of time.

C: In your mercy, keep war from our shores, and frustrate the plans of all those who would cause us terror.

P: Lord of the Nations, we ask that you would continue to bless our country with men and women who are willing to go to distant and dangerous places to protect us from those who would do us harm.

C: We pray that you will continue to bless us with veterans who have served faithful and true.

P: Be with our veterans as they continue their march through life. Protect them from the ambush of sin and the firepower of Satan. Give them the health and strength they need to carry out the missions in life that you have laid before them.

C: Be, Lord, their shield and strength, their guide and their rearguard. Give to them the peace that surpasses all understanding as they place their trust in Jesus.

P: When their tour of duty in the world is over, give them the order to come home. Bring them to where there are no more wars.

C: Grant unto them this blessing: when we are listening to taps being played over their grave, they may be listening to the joyous trumpet call of God and the music of heaven’s choirs. Grant this for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Our combined Emmanuel/St. John’s Worship Committee wants your feedback! We have been meeting to discuss opportunities for growth based on feedback you gave during our congregational survey. Your responses indicate that you feel that our worship services, worship attendance, and our level of spiritual growth could all be improved. Guess what? That’s exactly what God wants, too!

In the coming weeks and months we will be incorporating some fresh ideas into our worship life. The Bible clearly teaches that the Word in its truth and purity must never change. But the primary purpose of the manner or style in which it is taught is to reach out to as many people as possible in whatever way is possible and to do it all to the glory of God!

We will be inviting you to complete a brief survey in the weeks ahead. We ask for your honest thoughts, suggestions for improvement, your reasons for the possible changes, and how you might be able to help our congregation move forward. Please feel free to give a note to James Wachholz or the church/school secretary at any time.

All glory to God!

BULLETIN- THE 23rd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 28, 2018

ST. JOHN’S

THE 23rd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

October 28, 2018

PLEASE WELCOME TODAY’S (10/28) WORSHIP LEADER Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary senior Andrew Nemmers

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY  Jesus Delights in the Faith He Creates: On his way to Jerusalem to die for all our sins, Jesus pauses for something remarkable. When a blind beggar yells, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me,” Jesus accepts that title and heals the man. But “Son of David” means Jesus is the Jewish king. Doesn’t Jesus know such titles will shortly get him killed? He knows that well. He knows about the crown of thorns he will soon wear. He restores Bartimaeus’ sight anyway—mercifully and fearlessly. Then he praises the man’s God-given faith. Again, how astonishing!

A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP O Lord, our God: rule over the nations of earth and direct the affairs of this world so that your church may worship you in peace and joy. Through your Word and Sacrament, come to us. Forgive our sins, strengthen our faith, and help us live up to our high calling as your children. Amen. (see also hymnal pages 10-11)

THE DAY’S BIBLE READING THEME

Jesus Delights in the Faith He Creates

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Jeremiah 31:7-9

The Lord promised to restore his wayward people

This is what the Lord says:

“Sing with joy for Jacob;

shout for the foremost of the nations.

Make your praises heard, and say,

‘Lord, save your people,

the remnant of Israel.’

See, I will bring them from the land of the north

and gather them from the ends of the earth.

Among them will be the blind and the lame,

expectant mothers and women in labor;

a great throng will return.

They will come with weeping;

they will pray as I bring them back.

I will lead them beside streams of water

on a level path where they will not stumble,

because I am Israel’s father,

and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

PSALM 126 (hymnal page 113, sung in unison)

EPISTLE LESSON 2 Corinthians 4:1-6, 16-18

God gives spiritual sight through the light of the gospel

Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. Alleluia. (2 Timothy 4:18)

LITURGY (hymnal page 18, all sing)

GOSPEL Mark 10:46-52 (today’s sermon text)

Blind Bartimaeus receives his sight

Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”

“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

After the Gospel, all sing:

“Praise be to you, O Christ!”

VOLUNTEERS WANTED AT EMMANUEL Emmanuel Lutheran Church is still recruiting 1 (or more) volunteers to assist with the following position; all expenses are reimbursed by Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

1) Sunday School Teacher: This individual will help further the Christian up-bringing of parish and non-parish children, historically between the ages of 2 and 6, by managing the weekly Sunday School sessions held in the Emmanuel Parish Hall. The timing of the class and age group preference is flexible.

If you are interested in serving the Lord with your time and talents by assisting with these important activities, please contact Darrell Buchholz or Pastor Zietlow.

CHRISTIAN ONE-LINERS (from a WELS member): People are funny; they want the front of the bus, middle of the road, and back of the church.

ST. JOHN’S A/V ROOM–HELP WANTED Our current audio/visual crew (Tracy Hoffman & Aaron Wachholz) welcomes more members to learn what they do to show PowerPoint services on the big screen, record services to create DVD’s and upload to our church website, operate the sound system, etc.  We just need a couple extra volunteers to call on occasionally to help out upstairs.  No one will be expected to create powerpoints or copy the dvd’s, just learn how to record a service and run the powerpoints for services.  “Many hands make light work.”

See the source imagePRISON CARD MINISTRY  At St. John’s, we collect card fronts from Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and general greeting (thinking/praying for you) cards, so save them for us and deposit them in the collection box outside the office.  We then write encouraging Christian messages on them and share them with Institutional Ministries.  In turn, they are shared with prisoners.  We’d love to have your help!  Writing the cards is something all ages can do–even parents & their children could do this as a service project at home!  Contact Linda Wachholz (608-369-2635).  Our goal is to complete cards by mid-November.

BULLETIN- 22nd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST OCTOBER 21, 2018

EMMANUEL AND ST. JOHN’S

Evangelical Lutheran Churches

Mecan and Montello, WI

22nd SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

OCTOBER 21, 2018

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH! We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. Restrooms and nursery area are located the parish hall at Emmanuel and in the lower level and “link-way” at St. John’s. It’s nice to have you visit today. May God bless our worship together!

A PERSONAL PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Dear Heavenly Father: I come to your house today to worship you, to give you the praise you deserve and the prayers and hymns you desire. Through your Word and Sacrament, come to me. Take me by the hand and lead me to the cross where your Son offered sin’s sacrifice once and for all. Forgive my sins, strengthen my faith, assure me of my salvation, and inspire and empower me to do good works. Teach me today to look up to Jesus and live by faith. Bless my worship. Amen.

TODAY’S SERVICE Today we take a break from our usual liturgical service w/ readings, hymns, and sermon, and view a 40-minute DVD recently produced by the WELS entitled: “To the Ends of Earth.” Our lone Bible reading is from Acts.  Acts 1:8-11 describes Jesus’ ascension 40 days after Easter where he commands his disciples: “You will be my witnesses…TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH.”  Acts 16:6-40 describes the Apostle Paul’s mission trip to Philippi where he and his traveling companions meet Lydia, a slave girl and a jailer and his family. It shows how Paul connected people from all walks of life, demonstrating that the good news of Jesus is indeed for all people to the very ends of the earth.

PASTOR’S GREETING

K3–8th GRADE SINGS “Go!” (lyrics below)

  1. Go into the world, and tell all creation

that Jesus Christ is the One who saves.

Go into the world, and tell eve’ry nation salvation

has come to them today!

Young ones and old ones and those in between,

go make disciples for Jesus the King.

Study his Word, the Good News you’ve heard,

then get up and get out and go!

2. Baptize them in the name of the Father,

the name of the Son and the Spirit, too.

Teach them to obey what Jesus commanded,

and teach them in love just as Jesus taught you.

He said that sometimes the road would be rough,

but he’ll be with you and that is enough!

Study his Word, the Good News you’ve heard,

then get up and get out and go!

3. Go into the world, and tell all creation

that Jesus Christ is the One who saves.

Go into the world, and tell eve’ry nation

salvation has come to them today!

Some will not listen, but some of them will,

when you bring tidings of peace and good will.

Study his Word, the Good News you’ve heard,

then get up and get out and go!

4. Baptize them in the name of the Father,

the name of the Son and the Spirit, too.

Teach them to obey what Jesus commanded,

and teach them in love just as Jesus taught you.

Time’s growing short and we do not know when

Jesus the King will come back again.

Study his Word, the Good News you’ve heard,

then get up and get out and go!

Salvation has come. Not ev’ryone knows.

Go into the world.       GO!

CONFESSION OF SINS AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

Luther writes in the Large Catechism: “Christ himself entrusted absolution to his Church and commanded us to absolve one another from sins. So if there is a heart that feels its sin and desires consolation, it has here a sure refuge when it hears in God’s Word that through a fellow human being, God absolves a person from sin.”

The following order may be used when someone seeks the ministry of a pastor or other fellow Christian to make personal confession.

Minister: In the name of our God, to whom all hearts are open and from whom no secrets are hidden. Amen.

Minister and Penitent: O Lord, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy, and in your faithfulness, come to my relief. Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you. Answer me quickly, O Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.

Penitent: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and repentant sinner, confess that I have sinned against you in my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I am distressed by the sins that trouble me and am deeply sorry for them.

Here the penitent may confess specific sins.

Minister: Jesus says to his people: “If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.” His death paid for the guilt of your sins and the sins of the whole world. Do you believe this?

Penitent: Yes, I believe.

Minister: Because of the promise of our Savior Jesus, I forgive you all your sins. Be assured that you are a dear child of God and an heir of eternal life.

Minister and Penitent: O Lord, my God, I called to you for help, and you answered me. I thank you for the love you have shown me in Jesus Christ, my Savior. Through him you have rescued me from the guilt of my sin and given me the peace of forgiveness. Help me fight against temptation, correct whatever wrongs I can, and serve you and those around me with love and good works. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Minister: Go in peace. The Lord be with you.

BIBLE READING: Acts 1:7-11 & 16:6-40

He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis. From there we traveled to Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.

On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message. When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. “If you consider me a believer in the Lord,” she said, “come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

Paul and Silas in Prison

Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.

When her owners realized that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”

The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.

When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.” The jailer told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”

But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”

The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed. They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city. After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house, where they met with the brothers and sisters and encouraged them. Then they left.

CHRISTIAN ONE-LINERS (from a WELS member): We’re called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges.

A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination, and looked at the old pages as he turned them. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages.

“Momma, look what I found,” the boy called out.

“What have you got there, dear?” his mother asked.

With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he answered:

“I think it’s Adam’s suit!”

A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, “I’ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your bible a little and get your hair cut and we’ll talk about it.”

After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father’s study where his father said, “Son, I’ve been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you’ve studied your bible diligently, but you didn’t get your hair cut!”

The young man waited a moment and replied, “You know Dad, I’ve been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair….”

To which his father replied….”Yes, and they WALKED everywhere they went!”

EMMANUEL AND ST. JOHN’S

Evangelical Lutheran Churches

Mecan and Montello, WI

C:\Users\secretary\Downloads\riches_17782c.jpgWisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod

21st SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

OCTOBER 14, 2018

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH! We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. Restrooms and nursery area are located the parish hall at Emmanuel and in the lower level and “link-way” at St. John’s. It’s nice to have you visit today. May God bless our worship together!

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Jesus Warns Us to Guard against Greed – “I’m a little envious,” we claim. It is far worse. Envy is wishing God were not so good to someone else while ignoring how good God is to us. And our greed? “Greed is idolatry,” God says (Colossians 3:5). Still, God in Christ provides for all our needs, including the greatest—forgiveness of sin. He places proper priorities in the repentant believer’s heart. God even promises everlasting treasure in his holy presence, all by his grace.

Amen.

ST. JOHN’S SUNDAY SCHOOL SINGS “Nothing Is Impossible” (lyrics below)

I read in the Bible the promise of God,

That nothing for Him is too hard;

Impossible things He has promised to do,

If we faithfully trust in His Word.

CHORUS:

Nothing is impossible

When you put your trust in God;

Nothing is impossible

When you’re trusting in His Word.

Hearken to the voice of God to thee:

“Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Then put your trust in God alone

and rest upon His Word–

For ev’rything, O ev’rything,

Yes, ev’rything is possible with God!

The word of the Lord is an anchor secure,

When winds of uncertainty blow:

Though man in his weakness may falter and fail,

His Word will not fail us we know.  CHORUS

All things are possible, this is His Word,

Receive it ‘tis written for you,

Believe in His promises, God cannot fail,

For what He has said He will do.  CHORUS

  • NOTE: AT EMMANUEL & ST. JOHN’S…

OPENING HYMN 221: 1,2,3,4 “Blessed Jesus, at Your Word” (printed below, sing accordingly)

  1. Blessed Jesus, at your Word

We are gathered all to hear you.

Let our hearts and souls be stirred

Now to seek and love and fear you,

By your teachings, sweet and holy,

Drawn from earth to love you solely.

M: Oh, how I love your law!

C: I meditate on it all day long.

M: Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,

C: for they are ever with me.

M: I have more insight than all my teachers,

C: for I meditate on your statutes.

M: How sweet are your words to my taste,

C: sweeter than honey to my mouth!

2 All our knowledge, sense, and sight

Lie in deepest darkness shrouded

Till your Spirit breaks our night

With the beams of truth unclouded.

You alone to God can win us;

You must work all good within us.

M: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

C: so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

M: Yet so often we have despised God’s Word and failed to gladly hear and learn it. For this and all our sins, we bow before God and humbly ask his forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

3 Gracious Savior, good and kind,

Light from Light, from God proceeding,

Open now our heart and mind;

Help us by your Spirit’s pleading.

Hear the cry your people raises;

Hear and bless our prayers and praises.

M: God gave his Word so “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name”. The Scriptures testify about Jesus, who lived a perfect life for you, died on the cross to pay for all your sins, and rose again to assure you of your salvation. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C: (spoken) Amen.

4 Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

Praise to you and adoration!

Grant that we your Word may trust,

Confident of our salvation,

While we here below must wander,

Till we sing your praises yonder.

PRAYER OF THE DAY (read by pastor)

M: Let us pray.

C: (spoken) Amen.

(Please be seated)

THE DAY’S BIBLE READING THEME

Jesus Warns Us to Guard against Greed

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Amos 5:6,7,10-15 (today’s sermon text)

God warns the Israelites of their evil and greed

Seek the LORD and live, or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire; it will devour, and Bethel will have no one to quench it. You who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground you hate the one who reproves in court and despise him who tells the truth. You trample on the poor and force him to give you grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts. Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil. Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.

PSALM 90 (hymnal page 99, all read verses, all sing refrains)

EPISTLE Hebrews 3:1-6

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. “Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, ”bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

VERSE OF THE DAY (read by pastor)

Alleluia. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation. Alleluia. (Isaiah 25:9b)

After the announcement of the Gospel, all sing:

“Glory be to you, O Lord!”

GOSPEL Mark 10:17-27

Jesus teaches the rich young man about greed

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good– except God alone. You know the commandments: `Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’ {Exodus 20:12-16; Deut. 5:16-20}” “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

After the Gospel, all sing:

“Praise be to you, O Christ!”

(Please be seated for Holy Communion)

The Bible tells us that those who take Communion together are to:

  1. Recognize that Christ’s true body and blood are present in the Sacrament (1 Cor. 10:17).
  2. Examine themselves (1 Cor. 11:28), and
  3. Be united in faith with the congregation with which they commune (1 Cor. 10:17).

For these reasons, it is our practice that only those who are members of our congregation or a congregation of the Wisconsin Lutheran Synod (WELS) join us for Holy Communion. If you are interested in learning more about becoming part of our fellowship, please speak to the pastor after the service.

EMMANUEL-BIG MECAN PIONEER HISTORY Big Mecan-Little Mecan – Why? How? When did our first Lutheran pioneers ancestors come to Marquette County? Who were they? What about Budsin, and Newton, and Germania? Why so many different Lutheran churches here? As long ago and far away  as it may seem, how different are things today? These are among the topics that Pastor Dolan will present TODAY (10/14) at Emmanuel, at 9:00am following the 8am worship. You are invited.

SHARE (from a WELS member): “Some things are better shared: a grief, a joy, a meal, an open fire, a book, a toy. Yes, some things must be shared to fully please; our own faith is not the least of these.”

RECYCLE MEDITATIONS DEVOTIONALS FOR PRISON MINISTRY

Done with your summer edition of the Meditations devotion booklet? At St. John’s, we are collecting them for use in the WELS Prison Ministry. Leave your used copy in any of the 2 collection boxes located in the info room or in front of the office window by Sunday, September 30th. We will then mail them in to the prison ministry office. Copies must be no more than 1 year old and contain no personal information. Forward in Christ is no longer accepted due to private information provided in them. Thank you for helping with this important gospel ministry!

October Voters Meeting Notes

Thank you to those who were able to join us for the Voters meeting and here is a summary.

The Evangelism committee reported that after it was revamped last spring that it was given the directive by council to try and fine outreach opportunities in our community for the rest of 2018. Council did this after the congregation had expressed that they wanted to do more outreach in the surveys that were completed 2 years ago. So, with that in mind the Evangelism committee helped bring in a sponsor the Social Media Awareness presentation that was held in April and hosted by the Marquette County Sherriff’s Department, St. Johns also hosted a presentation on Teen Suicide and Self Harm. St. Johns had a booth at the Marquette County fair, brought back the float in the Father Marquette days and hosted our first concert on the ball diamond which was attended by 175 people and raised almost $1,000 to be split between WLA and the Montello Public Library. Future outreach opportunities are St. johns participating in the Holiday Trail. That’s 7 outreach events in 6 months so stay tuned for other outreach events.

Council will be working to get the Stewardship committee up and going again. It has been combined with Evangelism in the past but will now be set up as a stand-alone committee. If you would like to serve on this committee or are asked to serve on this committee, please prayerfully consider it and get back to Ciara or Paul Van Treeck.

Paul Van Treeck reported that we are bringing in less than what was budgeted in the offering envelopes. St. John’s is currently running about $5,000 behind over the last 3 months but have kept our spending to a minimum to compensate this so St. Johns is only about $100 off. This doesn’t mean that there are impending staff cuts or program cuts but it serves as a reminder for the congregation to take a look into and prayerfully their time, talents and treasures and see how they can be best used for the ministry of the church.

Paul Van Treeck also reported that the council has identified 4 large capital projects that they are encouraging members and those thinking of giving to the church through various means and estates to direct their giving’s to the following 4 capital projects.

  1. Stained Glass Window Repair and Refinishing= $115,000.00
  2. Parking Lot replacement and expansion= $100,000
  3. Church Front Doors= $20,000
  4. Removal of the Old Little Lambs House= $20,000
