INVOCATION

Pastor:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation:  Amen.

Please be seated.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Pastor:  Behold I bring you Good Tidings of Great Joy, which shall be to all people:  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

Congregational Response: (sung)

Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

Pastor:  Oh, come, let us sing unto the Lord:  Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Congregation:

He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Savior holy.

Pastor:  Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving. And make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.

Congregation:

But our eyes at last shall see him Through his own redeeming love, For that child, so dear and gentle, Is our Lord in heav’n above, And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone.

Pastor:  Oh, come let us worship and bow down:  Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

Congregation:

Not in that poor, lowly stable With the oxen standing by Shall we see him, but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high. Then like stars his children crowned, All in white, his praise will sound.

Pastor:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Congregation:  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

RECITATION . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Children

Christmas is a time of joy,

Mary had a little boy.

Though he was a baby small,

Still he is the King of all.

Worship him with heart and voice.

The King is born; let us rejoice!

SONG “The King of Glory Comes” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Children

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

Who is the King of glory?  How shall we call him?

He is Immanuel, the promised of ages.

  1. The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

He gave his life for us, the lamb of salvation;

He took upon himself the sin of the nations.

The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

Please stand.

CHRISTMAS PRAYER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pastor

Gracious Father in Heaven, you have told us to come to you like a little child.  In that innocence, we give thanks for the child born to us in Bethlehem so many years ago.  Help us always to approach the Christmas season with the joy and wonder of a child. And so today, we “come our hearts and voices raising” to worship the ChristChild, our Savior King, and to “sing his love amazing.” Through this Babe you grant us the peace of forgiveness and the joy of salvation.—What joyful good news you’ve given us to share!  Amen.

Please be seated.

SONG “In Those Days Caesar Augustus” . . . . . . . . . . . Children

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.  While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.  She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

               “Gentle Mary” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Congregation

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

Congregation:

Gentle Mary laid her child Lowly in a manger; There he lay, the undefiled, To the world a stranger. Such a babe in such a place—Can he be the Savior?  Ask the saved of all the race Who have found his favor.

Children:

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love you, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Congregation:

Angels sang about his birth; Wise men sought and found him. Heaven’s star shone brightly forth, Glory all around them. Shepherds saw the wondrous sight. Heard the angels singing. All the plains were lit that night; All the hills were ringing.

Children:

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay Close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender care, And take us to heaven to live with you there.

Congregation:

Gentle Mary laid her child Lowly in a manger; He is still the undefiled, But no more a stranger. Son of God, of humble birth, Beautiful the story; Praise his name in all the earth, Hail the King of glory!

THE CHRISTMAS CREED . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Congregation

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth, who sent

   His Son as my Savior on Christmas Day;

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

   born of the Virgin Mary,

   announced by the angels,

   worshipped by the shepherds,

   adored by the Wise Men,

who lived to suffer, die, and rise again,

   to free us from sin, death, and the power of the devil;

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

who has brought me to faith in the Christ of Christmas

and by whose continuous work in my heart

I am ever led to lay before the feet of Christ

   the treasures of my love

and live under Him as my King,

   both now and forevermore.  Amen.

XG O D ’ S     W O R D    F O R     T O D A Y X Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near! The forerunner prepares for the coming Christ by preaching repentance that brings renewal of life. The Root of Jesse will come in swift judgment on the unrepentant but in mercy and grace for God’s people. His coming will end the wickedness of the world and usher in a new age restored to the perfection with which God made it. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, fixes our attention on the need for true preparation for the Lord’s coming. Such preparation means repenting—recognizing how our sins have offended God and trusting him for the forgiveness he gives us in Christ. Jesus, the only Savior, brings peace to a troubled heart.

XP R E P A R A T I O N   F O R   W O R S H I P X

We prepare ourselves to worship the one Savior God by expressing our humble repentance, offering our fervent prayers and singing our thankful hymns of praise.

XT H E   W O R D X

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                    Isaiah 11:1-10 (today’s sermon text)

Summary: The blessings of righteousness and peace

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.  The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him– the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD– and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.  He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.  Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.  The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.  The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the viper’s nest.

They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.  In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious.

PSALM 130                                                                                                                                      hymnal page 114

Sung in unison.

SECOND LESSON                                                                                                                Romans 15:4-13

Summary: The blessings of hope, joy, and peace

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.  For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written:

“Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles; I will sing hymns to your name.”

{2 Samuel 22:50; Psalm 18:49}

Again, it says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” {Deut. 32:43}

And again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and sing praises to him, all you peoples.” {Psalm 117:1}

And again, Isaiah says, “The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him.” {Isaiah 11:10}

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                                       Luke 3: 4, 6

Alleluia. Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. All mankind will see God’s salvation. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                                          Matthew 3:1-12

Summary: The blessings of repentance

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'”

John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?  Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

ADVENT HAS BEGUN! It’s the season that anticipates the coming of the Savior. We prepare for this coming in many ways.  But one way is by decorating and beautifying our homes and churches. We use a circle of artificial greens around our Advent candles in the front of the church, with each candle lit in order on Sundays in Advent, and each candle symbolizing an important event on the way to the Savior’s birth—the last candle is the Christ Candle. But another way is to hang Christmas wreaths on the church doors as a sign of welcome. Once again—anyone interested in donating toward the purchase of wreaths for the front doors at St. John’s is encouraged to contact LuAnn Zieman at 608-297-2422 or email zieman@bugnet.net or by mail at W1440 State Rd 23, Montello, WI 53949.

ADVENT BY CANDLELIGHT WOMEN’S PROGRAM hosted by Emmanuel and supported by a Thrivent Action Team Project will be held today, Sunday Dec. 8 at 4:30pm at Emmanuel Parish Hall. We are looking forward to hosting all who have signed up for this special evening. If you have any questions, call Sue Stelter (608)297-2761.

EMMANUEL CHRISTMAS SERVICE Monday, Dec. 23 at 6:30pm. All are invited after the service for refreshments and fellowship in the Parish Hall. If you have an extra plate of cookies, please bring them to share.

CHOIR Are any members of Emmanuel and St. John’s interested in being part of the choir for the Christmas Eve Services?  If so, practices will be on Monday evenings in Dec., 6:30pm at St. John’s. Any questions, please call Lynn Sellnow 616-826-0816.

MEMBERS OF ST. JOHNS AND SCHOOL FAMILIES This past summer the St. Johns council authorized the borrowing of $10,000 from the church’s line of credit to replace and refurbish the school boilers. As some may be aware, there have been a number of issues from the last couple years keeping the boilers running and the school heated and it could no longer be repaired. This project was completed late last fall. This also means that the church officially is borrowing money from its line of credit. If you wish to donate to help paying off the loan, please go ahead and do so. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Look to the information room for where this project is at with regards to being paid off and where the other projects on the board are at with funding.

We prepare ourselves to worship the one Savior God by expressing our humble repentance, offering our fervent prayers and singing our thankful hymns of praise.

CHOIR SINGS             Lead Us To Your Light

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLES

One Advent candle is lit.

OPENING HYMN 1              The Advent of Our King

Please stand

CONFESSION OF SINS     hymnal page 38

We confess to God that we have failed to live up to the perfect standards in his

law, and we plead for his mercy.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS     hymnal page 38

The pastor announces the forgiveness of sins won for us by the perfect life and innocent sufferings and death of Jesus, our Savior.

OH TASTE AND SEE                                            hymnal page 39

This paraphrase of Psalm 34:8 reminds us of how sweet the good news of salvation is for Christians. Those who take refuge in Jesus, our Good Shepherd, are blessed.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Almighty God, your Son our Savior was taken up in glory and intercedes for us at your right hand. Through your living and abiding Word, give us hearts to know him and faith to follow where he has gone; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Please be seated for the day’s Scripture readings

T H E   W O R D

The Lord Jesus speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching and song.

FIRST LESSON                                                Isaiah 2:1-5

Let us go up to the mountain of the Lord

This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it. Many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob.  He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.

PSALM 18                                                                      hymnal page 69

The lectern side sings line one, the pulpit side sings line 2, everyone sings the refrains and Gloria.

SECOND LESSON                                                                                                               Romans 13:11-14

Wake up and walk in the light of the Lord

And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                     Revelation 22:20

Alleluia. He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Alleluia.

C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Please stand

GOSPEL LESSON     Matthew 24:37-44  (today’s sermon text)

Be ready for Christ’s second coming

As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.  For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.  But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

ST. JOHN’S CHRISTMAS TREE SET UP AND DECORATING Everyone is welcome to stay after the 10:00am St. John’s service and help set the Christmas tree up. The more hands, the merrier! Thank you in advance.

ADVENT BEGINS TODAY, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1!

THAI VILLAGE will be open today for the final day at St. John’s. Thai Village will be open today 9:00am-12:00pm. Come check out high quality fair trade goods including jewelry, bags/purse, greeting cards, ornaments, gifts and more! You can check out other items  online at https://thaivillage.org/

CHRISTIAN ONE-LINERS (from a WELS pastor): “We don’t change the message, the

essage changes us.”

WHAT ARE THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION? When many Christian congregation receive Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper in a worship service, the minister removes the cloth from the Holy Communion items, separates the bread and the wine, and then speaks words similar to these, “Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” These words are called the Words of Institution. In this column entitled, “Questions About Christianity”, we are looking at the different parts of a basic Christian liturgical worship service. This month we will learn about the Words of Institution by answering this question, “What are the Words of Institution?”

The Words of Institution were first spoken by Jesus in an upper room in Jerusalem on Maundy Thursday while he was eating the Passover meal with his disciples. During this meal Jesus took unleavened bread and wine and gave them to his disciples to eat and to drink. As he did this, he spoke the Words of Institution and instituted Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper. Since Matthew, Mark, Luke, and 1 Corinthians record slightly different versions of the Words of Institution, the one that is listed above is a compilation of all four of them. It is uncertain when the Words of Institution were first used during a worship service. They seem to have been used as early as the third century, but it is quite possible they were used even earlier.

AttendanceEmmanuelSt. John’s

St. John’s Altar CommitteeDecember  2019Diane Eisermann&Delores Cotte

Christian churches differ on why the Words of Institution are important to say during a worship service. Some insist they must be said because it is when the bread and wine also become Jesus’ body and blood. However, the Bible does not make this clear. What it does make clear is when people receive the bread, they are also receiving Jesus’ body and when they receive the wine, they are also receiving Jesus’ blood. In the very least, most Christian churches agree the Words of Institution are a good way to remind those receiving Holy Communion about how Jesus instituted it. It reminds them Jesus is their Savior whom they must believe in because he shed his blood and gave his life into death on the cross to forgive them of their sins. The Words of Institution also remind those receiving Holy Communion when they partake of this Sacrament God forgives their sins, strengthens their faith, gives them power to live a more God-pleasing life, and assures them they will go to heaven one day. Lastly, when the minister speaks the Words of Institution, he is preaching the gospel to everyone in the worship service, which God the Holy Spirit uses to strengthen everyone’s faith and not just those receiving Holy Communion.

Regardless of what you believe or your church teaches about the Words of Institution, it is a part of a basic Christian liturgy and it is something that has great benefit to our faith and our salvation.

BULLETIN- November 24, 2019

Z:\CHURCH STUFF\St. John's\Pictures\Church.jpg

Welcome! Thank you for joining us for worship this morning. In our service we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also gather to strengthen ourselves   through the study of God’s holy and powerful Word.

Restrooms are located in the link way (through the Information Room and down the stairs) at   St. John’s and lower level at Emmanuel.

Nursery In the lower level of both churches, the service is available to watch on TV and children have space for their needs. At St. John’s exiting church, it is located down the stairs to the left, to the link way, and down the stairs again to the left. At Emmanuel exiting church, it is located down the hallway to the right.

The Season of End Time The Church Year comes a close in November with the season of End Time. In this season, we are reminded that we are living in the “last days” between Christ’s first coming at Christmas and his second coming on Judgment Day. The world could be ended any time. For a believer, the end of his life or the end of the world is a wonderful thing! It means the beginning of a new and better existence in a much more glorious world than this one.

Our Worship Series: Welcome Home

The Holy Spirit wants believers to think of each other as family. Having a spiritual family is essential to our well-being. In this worship series, we look at how our Father knits us together in love and unity. We see the benefits of being part of this family. In the Church, Christ has given us a better home.

Our Theme for Today: You Are Part of Christ’s Glorious Kingdom

Windsor. Bernadotte. Bourbon-Anjou. Orange-Nassau. Glücksburg. Liechtenstein.

Do you know what those names have in common? They are all names of royal families. A member of each of those families serves as a monarch. The extended members of those families enjoy fabulous privileges, even if the monarch serves largely as a figurehead.

For the past month, we have seen that Christ has welcomed us into his home and made us part of this family. Today, we see that this is a royal family. For our brother Jesus is King. He does more than serve as a figurehead. Christ rules over all Creation for the benefit of his family. He promises us that one day we will sit with him on his throne (Revelation 3:21).

Today—Christ the King Sunday—the Church Year comes to an end. We praise Christ for his glorious reign. We thank him for making us part of his royal family, giving us a claim to the Kingdom.

INVOCATION

M: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

C: To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.             Revelation 1:4-6

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteousness.”               Jeremiah 23:5-6

Since we have such a merciful King, let us humbly approach his throne, confess our sins, and plead for his mercy.

C: Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. You are not a God who takes pleasure in evil; with you the wicked cannot dwell. The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong. But I, by your great mercy, will come into your house; in reverence will I bow down toward your holy temple. Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness. For surely, O Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.                         Psalm 5:2-5,7-8,12

M: As God’s called servant I announce to you what the LORD says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

“I am the LORD, your Holy One, Israel’s Creator, your King. Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. You are my witnesses, and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he.
I am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior. I am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more. Isaiah 43:1,10-11,15,25

C: Amen.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

CW431 - for Christ the King Sunday

After a brief musical introduction, the congregation sings:

PRAYER OF THE DAY

 M: Lord Jesus Christ,

by your victory you have broken the power of the evil one. Fill our hearts with joy and peace as we look with hope to that day when every creature in heaven and earth will acclaim you King of kings and Lord of lords to your unending praise and glory; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

  The Word

FIRST LESSON           Jeremiah 23:2-6

Christ is the King of kings, with countless sheep in his flock. Yet he cares for every single one.
He knows us by name. He leads into his kingdom of peace and righteousness.

2 Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord. “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.

PSALM OF THE DAY— 45             hymnal page 83

SECOND LESSON                     Colossians 1:13-20

Everyone is part of a kingdom. The only question is if it is a kingdom of darkness or light. Everyone has a king. The only question is if your king really cares for you. Our Savior-King has proven his love in blood.

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

VERSE OF THE DAY                        Revelation 22:13

M: Alleluia. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Alleluia.

GOSPEL                   Luke 23:35-43 (today’s sermon text)

With eyes of faith, the criminal sees Jesus for whom he really is—a gracious
king, suffering and dying that we might be forgiven.

35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.

39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

CONFESSION OF FAITH             Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The world could end at any time.

Our Theme for Today: You Have an Everlasting Family

You are Part of Christ’s Glorious Kingdom

Death is ugly. It does not matter if someone dies after a long, protracted fight with some illness or if they die peacefully in their sleep. Either way, the body goes into the ground and begins to decay. Either way, that person is gone, and their absence is constantly noticed.

Death would be overwhelming were it not for the fact that, for the believer, Christ has completely transformed death. Death is not the end. For those who are part of Christ’s family, death is the beginning of a new and better life, one where the deceased has triumphed over sin and all its consequences.

We thank God for this beautiful gospel truth—that Christians have an everlasting family. When Christian loved ones die, they are not “lost.” Something is lost when: a) you don’t know where it is, and therefore b) you will not see it again. We know exactly where our deceased Christian loved ones are. We look forward to being reunited with them soon.

Today, we celebrate the Saints Triumphant—those believers who have died and been welcomed into their true home with Jesus.

OPENING HYMN — 551: verses 1, 2, & 3         For All the Saints

INVOCATION

M: The grace of our Lord  Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.                   2 Corinthians 13:13

C: And also with you.

M: I heard a voice from heaven say,

“Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.”

C: “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor,

for their deeds will follow them.”           Revelation 14:13

M: For the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom

and will possess it forever —

C: yes, for ever and ever!       Daniel 7:18

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Beloved in the Lord,

we desire to one day join the saints triumphant in heaven.

Yet we have disobeyed God, and deserve only his wrath and punishment.

Therefore, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father,

asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful,

and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions.

I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good.

For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.

But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray:

Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us

and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority,

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son  and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen!

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

After a brief musical introduction, the congregation sings:

ALL (sung): Oh, blest communion, fellowship divine!

We feebly struggle; they in glory shine,

Yet all are one within your grand design. Alleluia! Alleluia!

And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long,

Steals on the ear the distant triumph-song,

And hearts are brave again and arms are strong. Alleluia! Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west;

Soon, soon, to faithful warriors comes their rest.

Sweet is the calm of paradise the blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Almighty God and Savior,

you have set the final day and hour

when we shall be delivered from this world of sin and death.

Keep us ever watchful for the coming of your Son

that we may sit with him

and all your holy ones at the marriage feast in heaven;

through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

  The Word

FIRST LESSON                   Isaiah 65:17-25

In the New Jerusalem we will not experience the “former things” like death, crying,
and pain. We will enjoy the company of our Christian family for all eternity.

17 “See, I will create new heavens and a new earth.
The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.
18 But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create,
for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.
19 I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people;
the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.

20 “Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days,
or an old man who does not live out his years;
the one who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere child;
the one who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed.
21 They will build houses and dwell in them;
they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
22 No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat.
For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people;
my chosen ones will long enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They will not labor in vain,
nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune;
for they will be a people blessed by the Lord,

they and their descendants with them.
24 Before they call I will answer;
while they are still speaking I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb will feed together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox,
and dust will be the serpent’s food.
They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,”
says the Lord.

PSALM OF THE DAY         Psalm 150

M: Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary;

C: praise him in his mighty heavens.

M: Praise him for his acts of power;

C: praise him for his surpassing greatness.

M: Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,

C: praise him with the harp and lyre,

M: praise him with timbrel and dancing,

C: praise him with the strings and pipe,

M: praise him with the clash of cymbals,

C: praise him with resounding cymbals.

M: Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

C: Praise the Lord.

After a brief musical introduction, the congregation sings:

ALL (sung): But then there breaks a yet more glorious day:

The saints triumphant rise in bright array;

The King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia! Alleluia!

SECOND LESSON                       Revelation 22:1-5

The vastness of our heavenly home is beyond our comprehension.
We will live in our new home “for ever and ever.”

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

VERSE OF THE DAY             Revelation 7:15

M: Alleluia. They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple. Alleluia.

After a brief musical introduction, the congregation sings:

ALL (sung): From earth’s wide bounds to ocean’s farthest coast

Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,

Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL     Luke 20:27-38 (today’s sermon text)

Through a parable Jesus teaches that on Judgment Day those who wasted their God-given gifts will have to give an account. Fortunately, when judging us, the Master will look at what Christ has done as our Savior.

27 Some of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless.30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

M: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

HYMN OF THE DAY — 728                 Jerusalem the Golden

SERMON                              Luke 20: 27-38  – “You Have Something to Look Forward To”

Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH             with commemoration for the faithfully departed

M: With thanksgiving and praise, O Lord, we remember all your faithful servants who throughout the ages have witnessed to your name: the mighty and the lowly, great leaders and humble men and women, those who have served you in prosperity and those who in the day of trouble have not failed. We rejoice that they now rest from their labors in your presence.

C: You are the rest of the blessed dead. We thank you for all who have died in the peace of Christ. We thank you for those whom you gave to our congregation for a time as a blessing but have now called home. We remember their names before you.

M: Joel Jaster, age 57, called home on December 19, 2018.

Gordon Fabian, age 90, called home on February 14, 2019.

I am resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.

M: Penny Brennecke, age 65, called home on February 20, 2019.

Frieda Otto, age 98, called home March 18, 2019.

Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.”

C: “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor.”                         Revelation 13:14

M: Ardis Henning, age 78, called home May 26, 2019.

Harley Crown, age 98, called home on July 14, 2019.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

C: Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.             Colossians 3:1-2

M: Carol Schumann, age 76, called home July 26, 2019.

M:  Lyndsay Lynch, age 26, called home October 25, 2019.

And if I go and prepare a place for you,

C: I will come again and will take you to myself.           John 14:3

M: Raymond Zacharias, age 75, called home on November 7, 2019.

Thanks be to God.

C: He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.                   1 Corinthians 15:57

Silent prayer as we remember other members of the saints triumphant

M: Heavenly Father, we recall with gratitude what you have done for us and for your Church through these saints. May their good works, which were prompted by your love in Christ and performed to your glory while here on earth, encourage us to live for you. As we join our worship and work with theirs, may we acknowledge ourselves to be part of that great cloud of witnesses from every age and place.

C: Unite all your people in the true faith, in the hope of an eternity at your side, and in the love that reveals us to be your children.

M: Through your Word, remind us who have not yet reached heaven that we remain part of the saints militant. Fill us with your Spirit, so that we continue to wage war for you, as our Christian forefathers did—battling against our sinful flesh, winning souls for Christ, and combating the deadly influence of Satan in this world.

C: Uphold your promise to use your Word and Sacraments to keep us in the faith so that, when our work on earth is done, we may join the saints triumphant.

Special prayers and petitions may follow

LORD’S PRAYER

M: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

C: Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins,

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and forever. Amen.

BLESSING

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. Live in harmony with one another. Serve the Lord with gladness.

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

C: Amen.

Welcome Home!
Our Need for Christian Community
The Lost Are Now Found
You Are Free to Be Yourself
You Are Perfectly Safe Here
You Have an Everlasting Family
You are Part of Christ’s Glorious Kingdom

The Season of End Time The Church Year comes a close in November with the season of End Time. In this season, we are reminded that we are living in the “last days” between Christ’s first coming at Christmas and his second coming on Judgment Day. The world could be ended at any time.

Our Theme for Today: Home, Where You Are Perfectly Safe

Twenty-one billion dollars. That is how much Americans spend annually on home security. We want our homes to be a place that our family can feel safe, where they can be apart from everything that can hurt them.

However, the reality is that no matter how many locks and alarms and cameras you might use to guard your house, you and your family are not perfectly safe. There is a greater danger than thieves … a greater threat than bullies. There is even something worse than physical death. Judgment Day is coming, and with it, the destruction of all creation. If that day comes and you are not prepared, you begin an eternal nightmare.

In the Church, our brother Jesus has given us a home that is indeed perfectly safe. Not even Judgment Day can touch it. Christians can look forward to Judgment Day with great anticipation. Even as “the mountains fall into the heart of the sea” (Psalm 46:2), we have Christ’s promise that we will be perfectly safe.

OPENING HYMN — 220                                             O’er the Distant Mountains Breaking

Please stand

INVOCATION

M:  The grace of our Lord U Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

      be with you all.

C:   And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M:  Beloved in the LORD, the day is surely coming, and it will burn like a furnace.

Therefore, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father,

asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C:   Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am sinful by nature,

and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions.

I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good.

For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity.

But I am truly sorry for my sins,

and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray:

Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M:  God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us

and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority,

I forgive all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son U and of the Holy Spirit.

C:   Amen!

M:        In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

After a brief musical introduction, soloist sings verse 1, the congregation sings verse 2.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M:  Lord God Almighty, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and to the day of your righteous judgment. Keep us steadfast in true and living faith and present us at last holy and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:   Amen.

Please be seated

X  The Word  X

FIRST LESSON                                                                                           Jeremiah 26:1-6

The Lord’s judgment is coming to bring destruction on those who refuse to listen to his Word. We rejoice that in Christ, we are considered the family of God and so will be safe on the Last Day.

1Early in the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: 2 “This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord. Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word. 3 Perhaps they will listen and each will turn from their evil ways. Then I will relent and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done.Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: If you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you, 5 and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened), 6 then I will make this house like Shiloh and this city a curseamong all the nations of the earth.’”

PSALM OF THE DAY – 133, Adult Choir                            How Very Good and Pleasant

Choir sings the opening refrain and cantors sing the verses. Congregation joins choir for refrains

after each verse.

Refrain:

♫  How very good and pleasant

     when we live in unity.

     It is like precious oil,

     like fresh morning dew.

    We gather here together

with our hearts and voices raised

     to God, who’s the center

     Of our unity and praise!

SECOND LESSON                                                                            2 Thessalonians 1:5-10

The Lord Jesus is revealed as a judge. His ruling will be just. Those who do not acknowledge him will be punished. But those who have faith in him will be brought to everlasting glory.

All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

After a brief musical introduction, the congregation sings the following.

♫ 4  Yea, Amen, let all adore you High on your eternal throne.

GOSPEL                                                                           Luke 19:11-27 (today’s sermon text)

Through a parable Jesus teaches that on Judgment Day those who wasted their God-given gifts will have to give an account. Fortunately, when judging us, the Master will look at what Christ has done as our Savior.

11 While they were listening to this, he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once. 12 He said: “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to have himself appointed king and then to return. 13 So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’

14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

15 “He was made king, however, and returned home. Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it.

16 “The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’

17 “‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.’

18 “The second came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned five more.’

19 “His master answered, ‘You take charge of five cities.’

20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’

22 “His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’

24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’

25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’

26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

M:  Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear our voices.

C:   Let your ears be attentive to our cries for mercy.

M:  Heavenly Father, we confess with sorrow that we have sinned

and deserve only your anger and punishment.

C:   If you kept a record of sins, we would surely be lost.

M:  We confess with joy that your unfailing love has redeemed us.

C:   Our hope is in you and in your full redemption.

M:  Around us we see the birth pangs of the last days:

war, famine, earthquakes, false prophets, spiritual apathy.

C:   Use these signs to remind us that we do not know

the day or the hour when Christ will come again.

M:  Keep us faithful to your Word; send your Spirit to strengthen our faith

so that we are always prepared for your Son’s return as judge.

C:   Make us faithful in sharing your Word,

and cause many more to put their hope in you before the end comes.

M:  Build our fellowship of love as brothers and sisters in faith.

C:   Help us support one another when trials and troubles come our way.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow

M:  Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

         Silent prayer

M:  Heavenly Father, we eagerly await for Jesus to come again and make all things new.

May he find us, whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life,

faithfully enduring until the end, through the power of your Holy Spirit.

C:   Come, Lord Jesus. May your grace be with us. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

M:  Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

C:   Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

St. John’s School Chimes : “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”

Pastor’s Greeting–Five Latin phrases emerged during the Reformation to summarize the Reformers’ theological convictions about the essentials of Christianity.  Sola Scriptura, which means the Bible alone is our highest authority; Sola Fide, which means we are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ; Sola Gratia, which means we are saved by the grace of God alone; Solus Christus, which means Christ alone is our Lord, Savior, and King; and Soli Deo Gloria, which means we live for the glory of God alone.

Choir:  “On Faith Alone”  (Sola Fide)

Please stand

Congregation Hymn sung to the tune of CW 477 “What Is the World to Me”; 3 verses with new lyrics by Arden W. Mead interspersed with liturgy from Psalm 103 spoken responsively by Pastor and congregation:

♫ By grace we have been saved, by God’s abundant favor.

It is the gift of God through faith in Christ, our Savior.
    No merit may we claim, no effort of our own;
It is the gift of God through faith in Christ alone.

P  With all my heart I praise the Lord, and with all that I am I praise his holy name!

C  With all my heart I praise the Lord! I will never forget how kind he has been.

P  The Lord forgives our sins, heals us when we are sick, and protects us from death.

C  His kindness and love are a crown on our heads.

P  Each day that we live, he provides for our needs.

C  He gives us the strength of a young eagle.

P  How great is God’s love for all who worship him?

C  Greater than the distance between heaven and earth!

P  How far has the Lord taken our sins from us?

C  Farther than the distance from east to west!

♫ When we were dead in sin, God sent his Son to save us.

It is the gift of God that life eternal gave us.
By God’s abundant grace we with the Lord are raised.
It is the gift of God, whose name fore’er be praised.

P  The Lord is always kind to those who worship him,

C  and he keeps his promises to their descendants who faithfully obey him.

P  God has set up his kingdom in heaven, and he rules the whole creation.

C  Let all of God’s creation and all that he rules come and praise the Lord.

P  With all my heart I praise the Lord.

♫ We are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus.
It is the gift of God that thus his mercy frees us
To live in holiness the life that God desires.
It is the gift of God that such good works inspires.

Prayer of the Day

Your Word tells us, Lord, that it is by grace we are saved, not by works, and that it is a gift from God, lest anyone should boast. Let us bask in the blessing of this true gift from you of our salvation from sin, death and the devil, not because of anything we have done but because of what your Son did for us on the cross by dying in our stead for our transgressions and rising to life three days later that we might live a new life in heaven with you. May this miraculous message, uncovered again during the Reformation, which we celebrate this day, be our guiding light and our bold claim in how we live our lives for you. Amen.

The First Lesson  Isaiah 55:1-11

Summary: Invitation to the Thirsty

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David. See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a ruler and commander of the peoples. Surely you will summon nations you know not, and nations you do not know will come running to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has endowed you with splendor.  Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.  Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.  ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD.  ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.  As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,  so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.’”

Psalm 46  The Reformation Psalm is sung by the congregation to the tune of CW 441 “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” with words as follows:

God is our Refuge and our Strength, our Helper ever near.
The Lord of hosts is on our side to shelter us from fear.

Though mountains fall and storms arise and fearful tempests blow,
Our God is with us, and he leads where peaceful waters flow.

God’s steadfast help will surely come as certain as the dawn.
The Lord of hosts is on our side, so let all fear be gone!

The trembling nations hear his voice, their awesome Sov’reign own:
“Be still, and know that I am God, and I will reign alone!”

Come and behold what God has done: as adversaries yield,
He breaks the bow and snaps the spear and burns with fire the shield.

O God our Refuge, God our Strength, accept the praise we bring
For mercy shown by grace alone through Christ, our Savior-King!

The Second Lesson, Ephesians 2:1-10  (sermon text in bold)

Summary: Made Alive in Christ

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,  in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.  All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

The Alleluia verse is sung by the congregation to the tune of CW 322, “On What Has Now Been Sown”:

It is God’s gift alone that we to Christ belong,
Who claims us as his own and will our whole life long.
Alleluia! By faith alone God’s gift we own. Alleluia!

Rise for The Gospel, John 17:1-10

Summary: Jesus Prays for Himself and for Us

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.  For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.  Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.  I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.  And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.  I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.  Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.  For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.  I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.  All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.

The Sermon:  Ephesians 2:4-10

Grace Makes Everything New

1.  A New Life   2.  A New Name   3.  A New Job

Rise for the Creedal Hymn sung by the congregation to the tune of CW 256, “How Great Thou Art”

♫ We all believe in God, almighty Father
who shattered chaos, said, “Let there be light!”
Sun, moon and stars show forth his praise together,
All things on earth his wisdom and his might.
God loved the world so much he freely gave his only Son the lost to save.
God loves each child; by faith we understand it is God’s gift—a Father’s hand.

We all believe in God’s true Son, Christ Jesus,
Born of a virgin, for us crucified.
His holy death and resurrection frees us
To rise from sin, and in his grace abide.
Ascended to his throne in heav’n on high with saving love he still is nigh.
He will return as Shepherd, Judge and King. He is God’s gift—his praise we sing!

And we give thanks for God the Holy Spirit, proceeding from the Father and the Son,
By whose blest inspiration we inherit the benefits of all that Christ has done.
The holy Church is gathered ’round the Word where God’s good news in faith is heard.
Forgiven and forgiving, we shall rise to claim God’s gift of Paradise.

Prayers  based on Martin Luther’s Small Catechism Creed spoken responsively by Pastor and congregation:

P  O God the Father Almighty, we offer our thanks for richly and daily providing us with all that we need to support the bodies you have given us and the lives we are privileged to live.

C  Make us truly grateful for your gifts of goods and clothing, house and home, spouse and children, property, and all that we call ours—that we may regard them as your blessings and dedicate them to your service.

P  O Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, for us and for our salvation you became true man.

C  It is your gift alone that purchased and won us from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil—not with gold or silver, but with your holy, precious blood and your innocent suffering and death. Keep us firm in that saving faith.

P  O Holy Spirit, we acknowledge all the gifts of God today only because you have called us by the Gospel, enlightened us with your gifts, sanctified and kept us in the true faith.  Continue to inspire us in all these ways, we pray, that the things we do may show forth your glory.

C   By your Word and sacraments, you have united us with the whole Christian Church on earth. Continue to call, gather, enlighten, and sanctify more believers, and keep them with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.    Amen

EMMANUEL & ST. JOHN’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH
 October 27, 2019
Emmanuel & St. John’s
EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH

Welcome Home!
Our Need for Christian Community
The Lost Are Now Found
You Are Free to Be Yourself
You Are Perfectly Safe Here
You Have an Everlasting Family
You are Part of Christ’s Glorious Kingdom

The Reformation On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses—statements for debate—on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, beginning a spiritual and historical movement known as the Reformation. The Reformation did not just change the face of Europe; it restored the gospel to the church. It gave God’s Word to the people. As we celebrate the Reformation, we are not honoring the man for whom our church body is named. We are thanking God for his grace which he has demonstrated through the generations—preserving the church and setting us free.

Our Theme for Today We continue our Welcome Home sermon series. One of the joys of being home is you need not put on airs. Out in the world, we do all we can to hide our faults and failings. You might be afraid if your boss knew your secrets, he’d give you your walking papers. You might be afraid that if neighbors knew your personal issues, they might consider moving. But we know that in a healthy family, people will love us in spite of our faults.

As a young man, Martin Luther thought of himself as God’s slave. Thus, he was terrified of God. Luther believed God was a terrifying taskmaster, looking for every possible reason to punish him. But as Martin Luther studied God’s Word, he realized that was not the case at all. God is a loving Father. He does not pretend we have no brokenness or sin, but he paid for it all by the death and resurrection of Christ. Scripture says that through faith in Christ, we are completely forgiven. We are part of God’s own family—a family where we are loved in spite of our faults.

God’s grace not only frees us from the fear of condemnation and punishment, it frees us to live a better, more grace-filled life. We want to live as God’s children. We want to love and bear with one another—our brothers and sisters—just as our Father loves and bears with us.

This service offers the congregation a form of worship that focuses on the proclamation of God’s Word which God himself preserved through the Reformation of the Church.

Come Bless the Lord

Come bless the Lord,

All ye servants of the Lord,

Who standby night,

In the house of the Lord.

Lift up your hands,

In the holy place,

And bless the Lord,

And bless the Lord

Make Me a Servant

Make me a servant, humble and meek,

Lord, let me lift up those who are weak.

And may the prayer of my heart always be:

Make me a servant,

Make me a servant,

Make me a servant today.

Make me a servant, joyful and true,

Sharing with others all that You do.

And may the prayer of my heart always be:

Make me a servant,

Make me a servant,

Make me a servant today.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                  Jeremiah 31:31-34

Through Jeremiah, the Lord describes the new covenant established by the promised Messiah. He will  forgive sins and write the promise of grace on the hearts of his people, setting them free.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.
“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

PSALM OF THE DAY 46                                                                         hymnal page 84

Sung in unison.

SECOND LESSON                                                                                  Romans 3:19-28

We are justified by God’s grace, set free from sin’s curse and condemnation

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

VERSE OF THE DAY                                                                                   John 8:31,32

M: Alleluia. If you continue in my Word, then you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Alleluia.

After a musical introduction, the congregation sings…

GOSPEL                                                                                                         John 8:31-36

Within true discipleship comes the understanding and knowledge of the true mystery of Christ. With this knowledge comes freedom.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

M: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

C:  Praise be to you, O Christ!

Amen.

The Offering Prayer, Prayer of the Church and Intercessory Prayers are spoken by pastor. Please see announcements for those on our Intercessory Prayers list on bulletin page 14.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Based on Luther’s prayer at the Diet of Worms (1521) as he faced the papal and imperial authorities

M: Almighty, eternal God, out of the depths we call to you. The world opens its mouth to swallow your church, and our faith in you is too small to confront its lures and attractions!

C:  We confess the weakness of our sinful flesh. Satan deceives us daily. If we are to depend upon any strength from ourselves, all is lost. Help us, we beg, to withstand the ungodly way of life that the world has to offer.

M: The work is not ours, O God, but yours. O Sovereign Lord and Creator, we have no way to satisfy your righteousness, nothing to contest the Deceiver’s earthly power, nothing to mute its false attractions, nothing to uproot the rule of our sinful flesh.

C:  We would gladly pass our days in happiness and peace in an age awash with iniquity. Hear us, heavenly Father, for the cause is yours. Yes, Creator of all that is, your cause is righteous and everlasting. Vindicate your name among the nations!

M: O all-seeing Lord, have mercy on your church. You understand our plight. We thank you for sending a messenger of peace to correct the times between life and death. This One is your Son, Jesus the Christ, the incarnate Savior, who saves us from calamities that plague your church.

C:  You have chosen us to do your work. Therefore, O God, accomplish it by your will. Stand by your church each day in the name of Jesus, who is our shelter and shield, our mighty fortress. Through the strength of the Holy Spirit, such faith works joy and peace and willingness to serve a world in need.

M: We are even ready to lay down our life for this cause, as were your servants Martin Luther and his fellow Reformers and Confessors, who forcefully stormed the kingdom of heaven to restore the gospel of your righteousness to its central place in Christian life.

C:  For the cause is holy. Though this world is filled with devils and though our bodies perish in persecution, your Word and your Spirit still remain. The church always needs reform as its message encounters the false and frivolous. But the Word of God stands firm forever.

M: In the confidence of this faith, gracious Lord, bless our efforts to spread the gospel of the glory and grace of God throughout the world to the joy and edifying of all who hear and believe and for your glory and our good.

C:  Amen.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow

M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

      Silent prayer

LORD’S PRAYER

M: We pray in Jesus’ name and as he taught.

C:  Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.

Amen.

CLOSING HYMN — 203                                    Lord, Keep Us Steadfast In Your Word

Following today’s service, please give your completed pew register page to pastor or an usher.

Hymn Appreciation: Lord, Keep Us Steadfast In Your Word was written by Dr. Martin Luther in 1541 because of a grave and growing threat. Militant Islam was on the move. Seeking to conquer the West and force conversion, the armies of Islam conquered much of the Mediterranean world. They conquered right up to Vienna, the gateway to Europe. A service of prayer for the safety of Christendom was held in 1541, and Luther wrote this hymn for the boys’ choir. It is a prayer that God preserve his people regardless of the evil aims of this world.

BAPTISM

A Spiritual D-Day

Most Americans still recognize the significance of a day called D-Day. On that day thousands of Allied soldiers began the invasion of occupied Europe. It was a day of horrendous death and destruction. But that day also marked the beginning of deliverance from tyranny.

In one sense, the day of your baptism was a spiritual D-Day. On that day the Lord God initiated an invasion through water and Word. That day was also marked by death and deliverance. But that deliverance didn’t take place gradually. On that day you were rescued from hellish tyranny.

Both Peter and Paul invoke this imagery of death yet deliverance in connection with Baptism. The context of Peter’s declaration that “baptism . . . now saves you also” (1 Peter 3:21) is a reference to the universal flood. The flood waters destroyed a world characterized by rampant wickedness. Yet that same water lifted the ark and carried eight people to safety. That water safeguarded the promise first enunciated in the Garden of Eden. Something just as extraordinary happens in the flood at the font. “In [the ark] only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:20,21). Luther captures the idea well. “Now baptism is by far a greater flood than was that of Noah. For that flood drowned men during no more than one year, but baptism drowns all sorts of men throughout the world, from the birth of Christ even till the day of judgment” (Luther’s Works, Vol. 35, page 32).

Paul also invokes an Old Testament allusion that most believers will recognize. “I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea” (1 Corinthians 10:1,2). The mighty waters of the Red Sea destroyed the enemies of God’s people. Those same waters brought freedom and deliverance to the Israelites.

We can’t miss the evidence of God’s steady hand of grace. At the font the old Adam is drowned and God delivers us from a death that we inherited at birth. Destruction yet deliverance—the font is a flood that achieves both through the power and Word of the living Lord. Mark the date of your baptism, and each year celebrate that anniversary. On that day God initiated an invasion in order to destroy sin and to deliver you through the blood of Jesus.

What Is Holy, Holy, Holy?

The word “holy” means different things. It can refer to something that has many holes in it, such as a strainer someone dumps spaghetti noodles into. It can refer to a sacred religious artifact such as the holy grail or the Holy Bible. However, when the Bible uses the word “holy” it refers to someone who is sinless. For example, the Triune God is holy because he does not and cannot sin. Since God is holy, he demands human beings must be holy or sinless to enter heaven. Unfortunately, we are not. We break the Ten Commandments and sin against God every day. This is why God sent Jesus to be our Savior. Jesus lived a holy life and then went to the cross where he took our sins upon himself and suffered and died for them. Through his innocent suffering and death, God the Father forgave our sins. Everyone who believes in Jesus as their Savior is holy in God’s sight and will go to heaven where they will live holy lives forever. As believers in Jesus we eagerly look forward to the day when we will be in heaven singing our praises to God for making us holy so we can live there with him. However, in a basic liturgical worship we already praise God for this now. In this column entitled, “Questions About Christianity”, we are looking at the different parts of a basic Christian liturgical worship service. This month we will learn about the song Holy, Holy, Holy by answering this question, “What is Holy, Holy, Holy?”

Holy, Holy, Holy is often referred to by its Latin name Sanctus (Sanctus means holy). The Holy, Holy, Holy or Sanctus is a liturgical song that closes the Preface. Clement of Rome reported using this song in his worship services as early as 104 A.D. Over the years, different versions of the Holy, Holy, Holy developed. The song became widely used during the service of Holy Communion throughout most of Christianity by the fourteenth century.

The words of Holy, Holy, Holy come from two main Biblical texts. The first is from Isaiah 6. In this chapter the Lord allowed the prophet Isaiah to see a glimpse of heaven. As the Lord sat on his throne, he was surrounded by seraphs with six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. As they were flying, they praised the Lord saying, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” The second Biblical text is from Matthew 21:1-11. In these verses Jesus is riding on a colt into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday surrounded by many people who are putting their coats and cut palm branches on the ground as they cried out, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

Holy, Holy, Holy is a very fitting song for Christians to sing right before they receive Holy Communion. The word holy is said three times to depict that each person of the Triune God is holy. When Christians sing this song, they humbly admit the Triune God is holy and they are not. But they rejoice because God the Father sent his Son, Jesus, to forgive them of their sins and make them holy in God’s sight through faith in Jesus as their Savior. Through Holy Communion, Christians once again are forgiven of their sins and assured they will go to heaven where they will live in God’s holy presence forever because they themselves will be holy.

EMMANUEL & ST. JOHN’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH
 October 20, 2019
Emmanuel & St. John’s
EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH

Welcome Home!
Our Need for Christian Community
The Lost Are Now Found
You Are Free to Be Yourself
You Are Perfectly Safe Here
You Have an Everlasting Family
You are Part of Christ’s Glorious Kingdom

Our Worship Series Read through Scripture and count the times it refers to believers as “brothers and sisters.” You will reach the triple digits quickly. The Holy Spirit is deliberate with his choice of words. If he frequently refers to the Church in those terms, there can be only one explanation. He wants us to think of each other as family. Scripture teaches that what unites us to our spiritual family is infinitely more powerful than any biological bond. Moreover, you can lose a blood relative. They can be taken away from you by death. But you will enjoy the companionship of your spiritual family for all eternity.

In this worship series, we will look at how our Father knits us together in love and unity into a spiritual family. We will see the benefits of being part of this family. In the Church, Christ has given us a better home.

Our Theme for Today Is the church more of a country club or a hospital? Is a Christian community full of people who have it all together, whose lives are perfectly in line with God’s will? Or is the family of God an assembly of individuals who are all flawed and broken in multiple ways? Scripture answers that question. God’s Word tells us everyone within the church was at one point deeply lost. What changed that? How were we “found”? Amazing grace! God, in his grace, sought us out, called us to faith, adopted us into his family, and welcomed us home into his Church. Think of what this means. If the church is a collection of people who were lost in their sin, it is unrealistic to think that in the church everyone will be a perfect model of righteous behavior. No one is like that except Christ! Our salvation is an accomplished fact. But our Christian life is going to be one that often takes two steps forward and then at least one step back.

This is another reason we need Christian community! As a loving Christian family, we love one another, forgive one another, proclaim God’s forgiveness to one another. And when a brother or sister drifts backs towards lostness, we give chase, striving to bring them back home.

This service offers the congregation a form of worship that focuses on the proclamation of God’s Word and the celebration of Holy Communion.

INVOCATION

M:  In the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Confession and absolution

M:  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins

And cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   (1 John 1:8-9)

C:  For the wrong we have done, and all the good we have failed to do;

      for angry deeds, for hurtful words, for uncharitable thoughts;

      for self-centered living, and for failing to walk with humility and gentleness;

      for longing to have what is not ours, and for failing to give thanks for what is ours;

for those sins we do not even remember committing:

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, have mercy on us.

M:  God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin,

and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved.

In the name of  Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven.

Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit,

that Christ may live in your hearts through faith.

C: Amen.

M: In that peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord!

FATHER, WE PRAISE YOU                                                             Christe Sanctorum

We worship our God this morning with the ancient song of praise, Christe Sanctorum. This hymn was written by Gregory the Great in the 6th century A.D. It was used by Christians to begin worship during the Sundays after Pentecost. Utilizing this song celebrates the wonderful legacy that historic Christianity has left for the Church today.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M:   Lord, we pray that your mercy and grace may always go before and follow after us that, loving you with undivided hearts, we may be ready for every good and useful work; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                             Hosea 3:1-5

The Lord asked the prophet Hosea to turn his entire life into an object lesson. Hosea was to marry a prostitute, to love her and bring her into his home, in spite of her adulteries. This illustrates our God’s love. We all often love other  things more than our God. Yet he forgives us and welcomes us lost and broken people back into his home.

The Lord said to me, “Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”

So I bought her for fifteen shekelsof silver and about a homer and a lethekof barley. Then I told her, “You are to live with me many days; you must not be a prostitute or be intimate with any man, and I will behave the same way toward you.”

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods. Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.

PSALM OF THE DAY 133-134                                                             hymnal page 115

Sung in unison.

SECOND LESSON                                                                          2 Corinthians 2:5-11

A member of the Corinthian congregation had scandalized the congregation by living in public sin. He had
repented. St. Paul urges the Corinthians to welcome him home with open arms, to forgive and comfort
him. Why? Because Christ has forgiven us our countless sins and welcomed us into his eternal home.

If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent—not to put it too severely. The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. Another reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in everything. Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

VERSE OF THE DAY

M:   Alleluia! Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. Alleluia!

GOSPEL                                                             Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 (today’s sermon text)

There is rejoicing in heaven when the lost are found.

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

Then Jesus told them this parable:

Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

M:  This is the Gospel of our Lord.

C:   Praise be to you, O Christ!

Amen.

BULLETIN- WELCOME HOME October 13th, 2019

Welcome Home!
Our Need for Christian Community
The Lost Are Now Found
You Are Free to Be Yourself
You Are Perfectly Safe Here
You Have an Everlasting Family
You are Part of Christ’s Glorious Kingdom

Our Worship Series Read through Scripture and count the times it refers to believers as “brothers and sisters.” You will reach the triple digits quickly. The Holy Spirit is deliberate with his choice of words. If he frequently refers to the Church in those terms, there can be only one explanation. He wants us to think of each other as family. We understand the important roles a mother and father play. We know the joys (and challenges) of having siblings. Do we grasp that it is just as important that we have a spiritual family? Scripture teaches that what unites us to our spiritual family is infinitely more powerful than any biological bond. Moreover, you can lose a blood relative. They can be taken away from you by death. But you will enjoy the companionship of your spiritual family for all eternity. In this worship series, we will look at how our Father knits us together in love and unity into a spiritual family. We will see the benefits of being part of this family. In the Church, Christ has given us a better home.

Our Theme for Today “Army of One” was the shortest-lived recruiting slogan in US military history. It was meant to stress the strength of the individual. The Army dropped the slogan relatively quickly because they realized it was contrary to the reality that, in the army, you are completely reliant upon your team. In a stressful situation, the individual can be overwhelmed. He or she needs others. God knows this. The first time God looked at Creation and noticed something was off, the issue was that an individual (Adam) was isolated. “It is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Humans are hardwired by God to need fellowship, not just with him, but with one another. So, God is determined to bring believers into a loving, nurturing community—the Church.

Perhaps you have been a part of this Christian family for a long time. Perhaps you once belonged to a church, but for whatever reason drifted away. Perhaps you have never belonged to a church. Whatever may be the case for you, mayGod bless you as you listen to his Word today. May he help us all to realize that this Christiancommunity—this spiritual home—is something we badly need. Welcome home!

Sunday CHOIR SINGS —                                                                              Day By Day

Wednesday HYMN 365                                                    Love Diving, All Love Excelling

Please stand

INVOCATION

M:  In the name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M:  God has called us to live as family. Yet, our love for God and for each other is not what it should be. Our priorities and choices are often flawed. But the power of God’s love enables us to live a new life. Let us confess our sins to God and ask for his forgiveness.

C:  Almighty God, merciful Father, I confess to you that I have not loved you with all my heart. In what I have done and left undone, I have pursued my ways instead of your ways. I have not loved my brothers and sisters as myself. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. I am truly sorry for my sins. I repent of them.

I beg for your mercy, O Lord.

Silence for meditation

M:  Forgive us for the sake of Jesus Christ who suffered and died for us.

C: Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

M: God has been merciful to us and has sent his Son to die for all. For his sake, God forgives our sins and empowers us to be his people. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: Our Lord Jesus Christ has forgiven us and reconciled us to God and has promised us the power to forgive and love each other. In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

After a brief introduction, all sing:

TO GOD ON HIGH BE GLORY                                                Gloria in Excelsis

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M:   O Lord Jesus Christ,

preserve the family of believers with your never-failing mercy.

Bind us together with the bond of your love.

Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful,

        and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation;

for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

       one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

FIRST LESSON                                                                                   Ecclesiastes 4:7-12

Scripture says that people are not wired to be rugged individuals. God created us to need
one another. Two are better than one. Even better is having Christ as the third strand
within a relationship. He provides the love and grace that keeps that bond strong.

Again I saw something meaningless under the sun: There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. “For whom am I toiling,” he asked, “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless—a miserable business!

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

PSALM OF THE DAY                                Psalm 133 How Very Good and Pleasant

Choir sings.

Together, together we lift our voices to the Lord.

Together, together we shout our praise to his name.

            Refrain

Through water and his Word the Spirit makes us family.

Salvation and new life are ours to share with everyone.

            Refrain

You servants of the Lord, now in his house lift up your hands and praise

the Lord who made the heavens and the earth.

            Refrain

SECOND LESSON                                              Hebrews 2:9-18 (today’s sermon text)

Jesus became our brother so that by his suffering, death and resurrection he might
unite us to himself and knit us together into a spiritual family

But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.”  And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

VERSE OF THE DAY

M:        Alleluia! I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters;

in the assembly I will sing your praises. Alleluia!

GOSPEL                                                                                                 Matthew 11:25-30

Jesus wants us in his family so that he might give us rest and peace.

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

M:  This is the Gospel of our Lord.

C:   Praise be to you, O Christ!

Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

WELCOME HOMESUNDAY: TODAY, OCTOBER 13TH THE BLESSING OF “HOME”

There’s something about home. Home is where you relax after a long day of work. Home is where you can let your hair down, because you know the people there will love you, even with your quirks and flaws. Home is where you feel most safe, in a world which is anything but. Jesus intended for his church to be more than a school where we learn about God’s Word. He intended it to be more than a cathedral where we praise our Creator. Jesus intended for church to be a home, a place where we gather with Christian family and enjoy all the blessings of home. Today, we are celebrating Welcome Home Sunday. We will talk about the importance of having the support of a Christian community.
