INVOCATION

Pastor:  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation:  Amen.

Please be seated.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Pastor:  Behold I bring you Good Tidings of Great Joy, which shall be to all people:  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.

Congregational Response: (sung)

Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

Pastor:  Oh, come, let us sing unto the Lord:  Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Congregation:

He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Savior holy.

Pastor:  Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving. And make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.

Congregation:

But our eyes at last shall see him Through his own redeeming love, For that child, so dear and gentle, Is our Lord in heav’n above, And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone.

Pastor:  Oh, come let us worship and bow down:  Let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.

Congregation:

Not in that poor, lowly stable With the oxen standing by Shall we see him, but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high. Then like stars his children crowned, All in white, his praise will sound.

Pastor:  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Congregation:  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

RECITATION . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Children

Christmas is a time of joy,

Mary had a little boy.

Though he was a baby small,

Still he is the King of all.

Worship him with heart and voice.

The King is born; let us rejoice!

SONG “The King of Glory Comes” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Children

  1. The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

Who is the King of glory?  How shall we call him?

He is Immanuel, the promised of ages.

  1. The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

He gave his life for us, the lamb of salvation;

He took upon himself the sin of the nations.

The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

Please stand.

CHRISTMAS PRAYER . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pastor

Gracious Father in Heaven, you have told us to come to you like a little child.  In that innocence, we give thanks for the child born to us in Bethlehem so many years ago.  Help us always to approach the Christmas season with the joy and wonder of a child. And so today, we “come our hearts and voices raising” to worship the ChristChild, our Savior King, and to “sing his love amazing.” Through this Babe you grant us the peace of forgiveness and the joy of salvation.—What joyful good news you’ve given us to share!  Amen.

Please be seated.

THE CHRISTMAS STORY, Part 1, Luke 2:1-7

SONG “In Those Days Caesar Augustus” . . . . . . . . . . . Children

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.  (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.  While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.  She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

RECITATION . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Younger Children

HYMNS “Away in A Manger” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Children

               “Gentle Mary” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  Congregation

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

Congregation:

Gentle Mary laid her child Lowly in a manger; There he lay, the undefiled, To the world a stranger. Such a babe in such a place—Can he be the Savior?  Ask the saved of all the race Who have found his favor.

Children:

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes. I love you, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Congregation:

Angels sang about his birth; Wise men sought and found him. Heaven’s star shone brightly forth, Glory all around them. Shepherds saw the wondrous sight. Heard the angels singing. All the plains were lit that night; All the hills were ringing.

Children:

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay Close by me forever and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender care, And take us to heaven to live with you there.

Congregation:

Gentle Mary laid her child Lowly in a manger; He is still the undefiled, But no more a stranger. Son of God, of humble birth, Beautiful the story; Praise his name in all the earth, Hail the King of glory!

THE CHRISTMAS STORY, Luke 2:8-14 . . . . . . . . . . Children

 & Congregation

Congregation: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

THE CHRISTMAS CREED . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Congregation

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth, who sent

   His Son as my Savior on Christmas Day;

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

   born of the Virgin Mary,

   announced by the angels,

   worshipped by the shepherds,

   adored by the Wise Men,

who lived to suffer, die, and rise again,

   to free us from sin, death, and the power of the devil;

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

who has brought me to faith in the Christ of Christmas

and by whose continuous work in my heart

I am ever led to lay before the feet of Christ

   the treasures of my love

and live under Him as my King,

   both now and forevermore.  Amen.

The bread that we yearn for provide us each day; As we forgive others, our sins take away; In times of temptation, to lead us be near; From evil deliver your children most dear.
